Eq Guinea Border Closed

Hi All,

Just had this update in today:

Members intending to travel between Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon and Gabon via the Kye-Ossi border crossing should seek alternative routes, such as the Campo border crossing, after the Equatorial Guinean authorities on 15 November indefinitely closed the land border in both directions. No official explanation for the closure has been given and it is unclear when it will reopen".

Apparently an attempted 'coup' a few days ago:

According to reports, the alleged coup was thwarted when the Equatorial Guinean security forces arrested 31 mercenaries, including Chadian and Central African nationals, and seized an arsenal of heavy weapons near the Kye-Ossi border crossing. The suspects were reportedly planning to enter Equatorial Guinea to overthrow President Teodoro Obiang in Mongomo (Wele-Nzas province), where he was staying. They were led by a Chadian general, who remains at large, and the leader of the opposition Citizens’ Party for Innovation (CI) Gabriel Nse Obiang Obono. Additional troops have been deployed by Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea on both sides of the border.

Separately, on 27 December, around 50 opposition activists from CI were arrested in Evinayong (Centre province) and an increased security presence was reported near the CI headquarters in the Nkolo Mbong area of Bata. Activists from CI, the only opposition party represented in parliament, claim that the government is using the alleged coup attempt as a means to crack down on their supporters, though it is unclear whether the two developments are linked.

Hardly the first time. In 1973 a friend of ours in Spain owned an ex-Navy MFV (Motor Fishing Vessel) which he chartered unwittingly to a group of mercenaries funded by Frederick Forsyth. I was going back to the UK so turned down the chance to act as crew but my brother Roger undertook the trip and ended up in jail.
