Ferry Jemen-Djibouti

May be is ferry Oman-Djibouti? |
Not that i know of.
I'm planning to find a freighter from Djibouti to Yemen myself when i'm in Djibouti city, i think that must be possible, other way around as well. Anyone who can confirm that? As for Oman, i think most will cross Yemen as well instead of sailing of from Oman, as it is a lot further away, does that maken sence? |

I am planning to ride from Oman to TZ via Yemen and Djibouti etc at the end of August. I can't work out from your post which way you are going or what you are doing?

I know of a guy (almost did so myself too) who put his toyota landcruiser onto a wooden Dhow (many ply the waters) from Djibouti to Yemen (they also go to Oman). This cost him $500 for the actual passage of the 4x4 plus another $500 or so for port fees, use of cranes in both ports and helpers on either end. If you have a motorbike, these figures will obviously be much lower and even lower if you go from Berbera in Somaliland (as I did in the 80s). Nowadays though, Somalia is not too great a place to be, neither is the Gulf of Aden tbf! Be warned though, the waters here can be choppy at times and shipping insurance is unheard of. Given that, the Dhow captains are very knowledgable people and of course, they don't want to lose their cargo either, so they go when the weather is good. All in all, it is an amazing way to travel, don't pass on it if you get to do so! |

Well actually no, I had planed on doing it,
Went back to Somaliland last year and was planning on heading over to Yemen on a boat with my DR200, when I was sitting in Berbera for few days waiting for a ship, I realized how dam hot it is , we talking August here, and it was only few days away from Ramadan. So I thought do I really want to go and explore yemen and oman in their summer time as well Ramadan. So I decide to head back to Ethiopia and go up through Sudan to Egypt. Next time maybe Just a reminder your need a Yemen visa before hand. Nairobi hands them out with no problems. Don’t know about embassy in Addis , Having been to Djibouti BUT NOT to the port, I think it would be a little bit easier to leave from berbera as its an informal port, and i found people to be much more helping then in Djibouti, but obviously it has more a security problem . Each to there own. |

Anthony_NZ - So what is the procedure to get into somaliland these days, last I heard, they had declared themselves as being autonomous? Visas, carnets??
beddhist - Shame about the bridge if the boat trip appeals to you, but a bridge certainly will make life easier if you wanna skip Egypt out (carnet costs), no longer will be have to ferry over to Saudi from Sudan but we can just ride over! If you really want some boating adventure, I recommend asking around in Dubai, there are Dhows there going all over the show! I almost got my 4x4 loaded onto one heading to SriLanka. (sadly, for 1 reason or the other, I never got to do so, I headed north to Iraq at the time). Though I reckon port security is very tight there and I dunno if you could do that nowadays :( |
