Ferry Sudan to Saudi Arabia
We are planning the next leg of our African trip. One of the options is to ship our truck from Port Sudan to Saudi Arabia.
Does anyone have information about the ferry going apparently daily on this route. Many thanks in advance Albert |
You do know a visa is impossible to get for Saudi, unless you have a company sponsor you as one of their workforce?
|
It is possible, but difficult, to get a three days transit visa in Khartoum.
|
I haven't done it myself, however some South African friends in a Landcruiser took the ferry about two months ago.
You can contact them for info through their website www.redheadsontour.co.za |
See this post in the forum I put in some time a go.
Hope it helps. http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...ah-saudi-43885 |
We are in Khartoum right now waiting (hoping) to get visas for Saudi Arabia sometimes next week. So far it does not seem to be as easy as I had hoped.
From what we gathered, we do need sponsorship from a company in Saudi even for a transit visa. We will know more next week. If anyone has a contact in either Port Sudan or Khartoum to help us please let me know - most people we have talked to here have very limited english so communication is a bit of a problem. I'll keep this thread updated for future reference. |
We are planning to do a southbound trip and are planning to go though Syria into Egypt and continue down ...
I have read that when heading north to south it is impossible to go through Saudi - can anyone confirm this? Or better yet let us know if and how it might be possible to pass this way and take a ferry from Jeddah to Port Sudan? Also I read that you have to be married to enter Saudi? Thanks! |
I don't believe this is the case, it certainly wasn't although things may have changed. When we were going trans africa in 2002, we met travellers who had come down via Saudi. I have repeatedly heard that you have to show you are married. Don't know whether you can get round this or not.

If I can get the Saudi Visa thanks to local people there, do I need carnet du passage to go into Saudi Arabia?
How about the neighbour countries? I have a Kenyan registered bike but not carnet. |
Thanks for all information on this site. For who is going north, this information:
I got the 3 day transit visa today, traveling north towards Jordan. Dutch nationality, driving a 4x4. First got the Jordan visa. Bring in morning, collect in afternoon. Then got the letter of introduction from my own embassy. Applied and got visa for Saudi. Bring in morning, collect in afternoon. Saudi visa total costs 86 Sudanese pounds. Nothing special needed: Embassy letter, passport, copies of Jordan visa, passport, car paper and drivers licence. Tomorrow i'm off to port Sudan, informed here in Khartoum, should cost about 250 US dollars for me and the car. Traveling alone (Women not allowed if not married to them). Some guy from Saudi embassy told me that visa are not given if not driving by car. For me no way to check that ofcourse. |
