What does he do and how much does it cost?

He took an exhausted newbie on his bike by the hand and walked and talked him through all the border crossing stuff in a pleasant, relaxed manner. This may not seem like much to the more experienced but in this case it was very valuable indeed (and almost (!) for free). What he could do for, and what he would ask from others I cannont say.
