Foreigner stuggling to register vehicle in South Africa - Any tips?
Hi
We are having problems registering our new vehicle with the SA authorities in J'burg, as they tell us we need to be residents or that we need a working permit. We are both non- SA without working permits and we do not think this is the case as we have read other foreigners have managed to register vehicles. Does anyone have any advice or recent experience of sucessfully registering with the authorities, especially in the Gautang region? Grateful for any advice. Thanks Tammy |
I was able to register a motorbike in SA on a 3 month tourist visa is 2004 without any problems. I am not sure if the system has changed at all, but at the time it was very straight-forward. This post has some further info:

Problems
At the moment there are huge problems with our license dept. They cant even arrange a piss up in a brewery and there are hundreds of locals still trying to register their vehicles here. I would maybe try out of town.
Maybe also try get a temp letter of work from someone if possible and your itinerary for what you want to do coupled with your carnet. |
Thanks guys
We managed to get through the system after trying 4 different licencing Departments in and around J'burg. I think they are all interpreting the rules in different ways. The main hurdle was the traffic registration number and then they were able to process the transfer of registration pretty much immediately. We needed to show proof of address (we used the addrses of our accomodation and an invoice of payment) My advice would be to obtain the traffic registration number before buying a vehicle!! Tammy |
