Guinea-Bissau to Conakry Border Crossings
 

For anyone with similar plans:

We are just back from a drive through West Africa where we tried to cross the border from Guinea-Bissau to Guinea-Conakry in the South-West between Quebo and Boké.

Both of the (very small) crossings were still closed in the mid of January as the water levels were too high.

Therefore we had to take the crossing between Pitche and Foulamory in the North-East which was a detour of at least 300km on very bad roads (all the way between Bafata and Boké).

All borders in the region close between 7 pm and ca. 7 am.

Thanks for the update TravelBug, always frustrating to have to make such a big detour.

Which way are you heading? Into Sierra Leone or onto Mali?

I bought a car in Banjul and drove it down to Monrovia (within 3 days). Now back in Europe.

Wow, Banjul to Monrovia in 3 days! You must have put in some long days!

Yes, we drove 36 hours non-stop from Banjul to Freetown and even had to "pay" the Guinean border guard to allow us to drive onwards in the dark, just after 7 pm "for security reasons", instead of compulsory overnight camping.

As an added pleasure, we tanked bad diesel at 2 am and lost 2 hours while a roadside mechanic (no doubt affiliated with the black market petrol station) cleaned the fuel system.

That road between Bafata and Boké is really rough...

Nice work Travelbug, Yeah, I have done some research on that road, we're going to pass on that one! We are going to take the 'easier' route from Bissau to Gabu, onto Koundara and Labe....will be a bit easier going on Aminah our truck!

Nothing worse than dirty fuel I feel your pain....I remember changing our twin inline diesel filters alomst every fortninght at one stage and draining our racor of water almost daily at times....c'est la vie!

Maybe with your truck you could cross the flooded border between Quebo (Bissau) and Boké (Guinea) already in mid-January. That's how I understood the border guards.

Thanks Travelbug. It's a back up option for us, but we want to include the Fouta Djalon in Guinea on our trips so it makes more sense to go via Koundara for us, even though that road is also pretty rough.
