Guinea-Bissau, Guinea-Conakry
Hello Travellers,
does anybody have any useful info about these countries? We are staying in Senegal, and plan to do a short (say about one week-10 days) trip. Any info about roads, fuel, accomodation, sites worth visiting would be highly appreciated! Thanks, Peter |
Guinea-Conakry: IMHO Fouta Djallon is worth a visit. Friendly people in the countryside, and whilst the main tracks are not easy, I found them quite straightforward on a lightly loaded bike. Care should be taken as there's some sharp corners, cambers and gradients and local trucks and cars also use them. I wouldn't like to attempt them in the rainy season though.
Get your visa in Dakar - I had problems (i.e. a long wait) to get one in Banjul. |
The visa for Bissau is available in Ziguinchor on the spot for 5,000CFA. Bissau is beautiful, the roads are OK. There is almost no "tourist" infrastructure so half the fun is finding it out yourself.
Try Cacheu (old fort) Boloma island, Xitole, Catio ande the Bijapos Islands. It is actually the scenery, the various cultures and the socio-history that are the most interesting in this country. | If you want to go to the islands then leave your car with Andreas Goll (aka. "Andre" or "Andre di Cabana") a 100%reliable German guy, on the entrance to Bissau on the highway opposite the "Lennox"(?) service station, about 2 km away from the airport, direction city centre, very easy to find, also does camping. Enjoy Bissau, there is no other country in the area like it. |
