Mali Visa at the border.

I am sure I read somewhere that it was possible to get a Mali visa at the Mauri-Mali, Kiffa-Kayes crossing. Can anyone verify this. We are at Essaouria on our way down so it's pretty urgent information.

In October I got 2 visas for Mali in Nouakchott, Mauritania, en route to Aleg and Nioro el Atrous. Took 2 hours.

Note they were NOT issuing visas to French citizens.

But not heard or seen evidence of visa at Mali border.

My information is dated, so take with a grain of salt (and only in the absence of anything more up-to-date). The several times I've entered Mali I've been allowed entry with a temporary document which had to be updated at a central office in Bamako--I've forgotten the name of the department, but it involved buying some stamps at one spot, then filling out forms at another, waiting in the usual interminable lines for an illegible signature, etc. In the absence of the required documents, bribes were gleefully extracted by anyone with a uniform--and there were lots of uniforms along the highways.

Preferable, in other words, to get a visa in advance if you're able to do so. That used to be easy enough in Dakar, with overnight service.

Again: grain of salt, mileage varies, etc.

Mali visa at the border

It is still possible to get the visa at the border from Senegal and Burkina Faso borders but not from Mauritania. I met an Italian who got it coming from Burkina. As mentioned above you would have to get it extended in the nearest larger town.

Thanks everyone.
I found the post, by Jimlad, and also found another post further down where he advises he mixed the borders up and was actually talking about the Maroc to Mauri border. I planned my route after seeing his first post and hadn't seen the second.
I want to come straight down from Tidjitja to Kankossa, Kiffa, across the border to Kayes, then into Senegal. There have been suggestions that a temporary visa can be obtained at the border for this.
Anyone know about this?
Ali.
