Maps for the West Coast run
Any suggestions for the best maps to take for a typical Morocco - Nigeria - South Africa west coast run?
I like maps and having a detailed map of each country if possible so suggestions for each country welcome (I'm ok for Morcco, just needing the rest - Mori, Mali, Ginuea, Burkina, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon etc). I also have a Garmin 278C with a 512MB memory card so can load maps into there if there any suggestions for those (but not interested in having it hooked up to a laptop/pda etc etc) With something more than the Michelin map of West Africa I think it is easier to find hidden parts of a country etc Oh, and if you have any for sale or to give away that would be great ;-) |
I don't have a specific suggestion regarding papermaps. But I found smellybikers wanderlust map, surprisingly accurate. Even very small villages is marked on the electronic map.
On the downside, this map does not contain any other info than a graphic display of a village/towns location. If there is a road or track between two towns, it is represented by a more or less straight line. So you can't use the navigation function on your GPS. It just gives you a very good idea of how far you are away from the next town. But as a source of local information and/or topography it is quite useless. Still, I don't hesitate to reccomend it. I found it extremely usefull in conjunction with a largescale Michelin map through west and central Africa. I know it wasn't what you were asking for, but thought I'd throw it in anyway. I payed $20 for my download about 2 years ago, but I see now that the price has gone up to $50. But in my oppinion it is still well worth it. Best regards Torsten¨ PS: Heres' the link: Smellybiker's Wanderlust Worldmap • Index page |
Thanks - but also keen on having some paper maps in case of gps failure (and because I like maps! ;)

Again, not exactly what your after, but Tracks4Africa are good (T4A) can be used with your Garmin and are much cheaper than that previously mentioned. loads of info, especially the south. Hardly any major routes on it, all pistes and "roads travelled". Would make a good secondary map for you :thumbup1:
Cant help you with paper sorry! G |
Paper maps I have used:
Marokko 1: 1 000 000 Reise Know How Mauritania map number 85014 IGN 1: 2 500 000 Mali map number 85008 Mali (1) 1: 2 000 000 Afrique Nord et Ouest Michelin 741 Senegal IGN 1: 1 000 000 I do like the Reise Know How maps as their paper is a waterproof nature. The 278C can navigate (albeit in a straight line) to any point- excellent unit which I have. Very screen customiseable too |
