Need a new tire in Nigeria!

Me and my fiancé are in Benin City, Nigeria with our 2010 KTM 990 adventure and need a new rear tire for the bike (150/70 R18). We bought a ‘new’ one in Lome, Togo about 1000km back and then it started to fall apart on us. Turns out the tire was nearly 10 years old... I know, I’m an idiot for not checking the day of manufacture but we were buying it from a reputable place.

Does anybody have contact info for places in Lagos or Onitsha where I can inquire about a new tire? Haven’t had any luck here in Benin City.

Thanks!

I fly into Lagos on Monday night, so could bring one over from Germany.

I didn’t see anything by way of a 150 or 140 wide 18 inch tyre between Lomé and Lubango so I wouldn’t hold out hope. Ability to take the weight is another factor.

I would bite the bullet source one from overseas either by DHL or take the kind offer above up. You can waste days or weeks going down dead ends with this stuff and it eats into your travel time. Days of food and accom. adds up to the shipment costs pretty quick.

What tyre did you get from Toni Togo? It may not have been up to the weight of the 990 loaded and 2 up.

Bell Driver, if you could bring a tire for us to Lagos on Monday, that would be amazing! We managed to get a 2014 used Meletzer tire shipped to us from Lagos yesterday but it’ll only be good for a couple thousand klicks I think. And like any Dave now says, finding that tire in Africa is not easy.

So, if you’d be willing to bring us a new tire that would see us down to Namibia or South Africa, we would take you up on it.

Sorry I’m not too familiar with this forum, but should I contact you by email or whats app to flush out the details?

Thanks!

Anydavenow, the tire we bought from Toni Togo was a Metzeler. Problem was, I never thought about checking the year of the tire, being as we got it from a reputable shop. Turns out, the tire was from 2009. Won’t make that mistake again!

aloden, I sent you a PM.

Go to the top of this page where it says 'Welcome, aloden'
Right underneath that it should say 'Private messages: Unread 2'.

Bell driver, you may know this (in which case please ignore), but as a new member the OP may not be able to send private messages. Best bet is to include an email address or other means of contact.

Hope that's helpful.

Great result. I had that tyre get me from Nouadhibou to Windhoek with zero issues. Try and stretch it to the end as tyres in Namibia are overpriced.

I suspect the Metzeler was really a trail bike tyre and not appropriate for the loaded 990, age aside. These tyres are OK for technical riding with minimal luggage and no pillion but that’s about the limit.

Brilliant! I’m starting the trip back to Lagos now. If anybody’s in Nigeria, the Afi Mountain Drill Ranch near Cameroon is a great place to visit!

Well thanks to Bell driver we are road worthy once again! Me and th rear wheel had a nice little night together in Lagos before the flight back to Enugu this morning and we got the tire swap sorted. Now to see if we can get out of he country before they try this election thing again on Saturday!
