NO carnet needed for these countries!
 

OK just for everyones info I just did the following countries with NO carnet and without any problems, cost about 60US for the few TIP's(tempoary import permits) that were required but most countries were free!

South Africa, Namibia, Botswanna, Zim, Moz, Malawi, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Djibouti.

On a UK reg bike, happy travels

Carnet for Yemen

I take it that you and Rene are still in Djibouti? FYI, when I rode through Yemen they wouldn't accept my Carnet at the border but wrote in my Aussie passport that I had taken a bike in and when I left from Al Marka they stamped me out. Had no probs at all with this but they didn't really want to do it first up.

Once you get into port in Al Marka, it's about the 2nd building along on the right side where this was done.

Have a good one mate and enjoy Yemen, try to go up through Salalah in Oman as well, amazing place that is!!

Bizarre: I didn't volunteer my carnet and they demanded it. Go figure. I got a 30 day visa at the border, my friend (also German) got 90 days at the inland crossing.

I second the advice on Oman, but there are many more places well worth visiting. Check my website for stories and pix.

We are planing a Barcelona-Cap town on a LansRover Santana from 1979 (2 en ruta por los 5 continentes. La vuelta al mundo de Robert y Eva - Inicio) and where really concerned about the souher africn counties. We hope we will no have any problem! If you have don it we can also try and hope (pray) for te TIP´s to be done straight!

Kenya does require a carnet for vehicles. Ethiopia you can get away with lodging your registration document at the border. Tanzania were making noises about it although we have used a TIP in the past.

The original posting stated a UK registered vehicle make sure it's the same for you, I take yours could be Spanish registered?

How did I get in then?????
 

Thanks for all the imput here, but I really want to express that I got into all these countries without a hitch, and they never asked where the bike was registered. Even thouhg it was UK reg that was never asked, I have now just come through Yemen, Oman and in UAE and again no Carnet needed, of course they ask for it but you know what I hand over, the TIP from Kenya that I got for free, the peice of paper is now covered in stamps from quite a few countries, its going to be quite the suvernior soon. So dont any body stress if you have no carnet, in my opinion you dont need one for the countries I have listed in the first post, play dumb they always sort something out for you, write in my passport or use an old TIP.

I'm not doubting you, but you were on a bike, due to rampant vehicle smuggling they are a lot stricter when it comes to foriegn vehicles.

To enter Kenya we had to leave the vehicle at Namanga whilst we went to the AA in Nairobi to organise a carnet. Then we skeeted back and cleared customs as per usual. We might have got in without a Carnet as a "gift" was hinted at but as we were temporarily resident we couldn't take the chance.

If you stay anytime in Kenya you'll need a "Foriegn vehicle Permit" - 40USD per month for the dubious pleasure of driving on Kenya's roads. To get this you'll need to show your Carnet and Comesa at Times Towers, Nairobi.

No worries then
