road from Lichinga to Songea
Does anyone know the road conditions between Lichinga (Mozambique) and Songea (Tanzania), just after the rain season (april/may). To be more specific: the road between Lupilichi and the border crossing at Mitomoni.
How is the Ruvuma river crossed? I'll be doing this stretch of road with a friend, both on a bike (xt600 and 100gspd). Gr. Mike |
Re: Lichinga to Songea
Greetings
I was up at Cobue in July and must point out that, although track from Metangula to Lupilichi has been reopened (still very bad if not impassable in rain even in the best 4x4), there is certainly no road of any description between Lupilichi and Tanzania (Mitomoni). The only place that the Rovuma can be crossed is at its mouth where a pontoon operates at high tide only. All other crossing points are by dugout canoe. I paddled most of the Rovuma a few years ago and found no crossable points. A bridge is now being built between Negomano (Moz) and Mtambaswala (Tanz) but this will only be completed in 2008. Hello Mike,
thanks for the reply. What crossingpoints are there on the western side of the border with Tanzania? Crossing by canoe isn't a problem, I've done that when the pontoon wasn't operating. Mike |
