Senegal, The Gambia - passavant
 

Hi all,

I'm in Senegal, possibly going to stay for a little while. I currently have a five day passavant (permission to have the bike here) which is - I hope - being extended right now with the help of a local fixer for a further ten days.

How many times can I get an extension here? Do I have to keep applying for blocks of five days or can I get something longer?

What's the situation in The Gambia?

For Senegal: I went to Customs in Dakar to get a short extension. Mr Omar (Customs) very helpful. Location details on ioverlander.

FWIW I far preferred Senegal to Gambia which is basically a sex tourism resort (my opinion!). But Gambia does have very cheap flights (not your thing I know[emoji51]) to UK and other European destinations.

Is there any limit as to number of extensions you can get in Senegal?

I'm attracted to The Gambia because of the wildlife, no visa requirements and English!

I think we'll spend a little time there and it'll be our turning point.

The whole security thing is a difficult call, but - given the fact that we are free to go where we please, and the responses of intelligent, informed people here (locals and ex-pats) - I think we've chosen to give Mali a miss. I know there's a big discussion to be had about this and it's not straightforward, and I respect other's choices, but I think that's what we'll do.

Still waiting to hear about possible sailings.

Would you recommend Camping Sakuta as a place to stay?

Yes....stayed there 2-3 times.

Hi, you've probably found out already but for anybody else....you can get a max of two x 15 day extensions. I got mine in the douane office in Dakar. Get a numbered ticket at the reception desk on the ground floor and go up to the fourth and wait. I waited about half an hour, saw the man and had to pay 2500cfa for a ticket stapled to my original passavant. The hassle riding in an out of Dakar, even having used the péage made it unlikely I'd do this again in Dakar.
