Staying in countries longer than tourist visa allows

Look, I've never travelled, so possibly the answer to this question is really obvious. Say I was to decide to live in country x for a while -- six to twelve months, say -- because I wanted a change of lifestyle/was doing some volunteer work/etc, what are the visa requirements? Specifically, I'm talking Rwanda, Ghana, Ethiopia, Uganda and maybe Tanzania. Is it possible for foreigners in sub-Saharan African countries to just ... rent regular places? To share house? Do such countries grant visa extensions that are that long or would you need to apply for something special (i.e. permanent residency status)?

Hi, Renting is entirely up to you I can't think of a single country where you cant rent a property, check out Visa requirements on that countries websites they all have them and they have all the infromation you need, as that's where we tend to find the stuff that we need.
