Sudan waypoints, in search for!
 

Hello,

Searching the net for the Wadi Halfa - Abu Dom route in The Sudan I could't not find very much info.
The famous site "Tracks 4 Africa" reqiures MapSource. I dont have it.

On the page of the Japanese guy "www.seagulljapan.info" I found a very usefull list of detailed route info including waypoints.

Does anyone know further sources of just lists wich waypoint with descriptions of the area?

I've understood that there is much confusion about wich route to follow, expecially in villages where tracks lead to all directions.

What software do you have?

If you have oziexplorer then 'mad mappers' have the russian maps for Africa

Tracks 4 Africa does a good job in the southern Africa .. but not so good in northern Africa.
You could use GPSmapedit software to look at the garmin img files .. Welcome to MapCenter

A waypoint is only one point ..it may tell you you are in village x .. but not tell you what road to use to leave .. What you want/need are maps or 'gps tracks' to guide you as to what road to use.

I found t4a to be really acurate on the 2 route's in Sudan (well.. at the screen it is! i'l have to find out if it is in a couple of months.) If you got the maps's you can use them. Mapsource is a free product so you should be able to legaly download it somewhere.

Are you sure? I think it usually comes bundled with a Garmin GPS unit for use in conjunction with 2 GPS devices. You can load it onto any PC without unlocking the maps if you can get hold of a copy but downloadable upgrades, e.g. 6.13.1 'will not work unless you already own a MapSource product'.

The Nile route could be done without a GPS, as it is relatively straight-forward to navigate. The only major concerns, as you correctly point out, is trying to navigate around villages and also finding the ferry that crosses the Nile near the village of Argo. Unfortunately I can't find the points for this route, but I do remember getting my points from this book:

Mapsource is worth buying and T4A are very easy to use and the ones I used very accurate.

The T4A maps are made from peoples GPS tracks .. so will be acurate to the level of the GPS at the time... I'd think 20 metres would cover the accuracy of the map and your own GPS ...


What I mean by T4A not being "good" is not having many of the tracks that are there .. and the tracks recorded tend not to have much detail .. the gaps between the points tend to be large .. that kind of thing. It is a lot better than nothing, but has lots of room for improvement.

Mapsource .. as said .. provided with some garmin products .. or the cheapest way to legally get it is to buy Garmins World Map...

Stephano - think you are taking of a map product .. eg "city Navigator" ... not the program "Mapsource" that uses the map product.. I've 10 map products and 1 mapsource program that uses all the map products ..

My personal view .. improve smelly biker's wanderlust maps so they are usefull to the traveller! The map set covers the globe, is cheap to buy .. and is improving. As I see it .. I can help by
a) adding my tracks
b) maping my local area - POI = campsites, cheap places to stay, places to see.. that kind of thing .. oh some interesting roads, main transport roads ..

Hi Frank, yes perhaps I confused the issue slightly by referring to map transfers. I did actually mean Mapsource. My reference to the upgrade (6.13.1) is for the basic Mapsource not any specific map set. Is it possible to legally get a free full copy of Mapsource if you haven't bought a Garmin unit or Garmin map product?

If you are interested I might have the entire route track log of our Sudan crossing still available in Mapsource format (see our route in my site below). If you go overlanding then I definately recommend you to buy (or find;) Mapsource (if you are taking a Laptop) because everybody you will meet on the road will have mapsource and if you want make use of exchanging info it will all be Garmin Mapsource format! Maybe I can help you out. Actually I will be giving a sort of GPS (Mapsource and Ozi Explorer) "workshop" on 9th of September for a couple of friends (all from Groningen!) who will be going to Africa shortly. Hello to all,

My 'problem' is that my Garmin Etrex Venture doesn't have any maps. As stated the only means for use will be some 'points' (way) on the Nile route to circumnavigate the villages and find important spots such as the ferry's.
Mapsource is another spending of approx EURO 100,- and therefore I also need a connecting cable to/from the GPS decive. (yes, it comes with the GPS but my laptop is USB, the cable is 'serial' and the connection EURO 20,-)
I prefer to spend the budget on the travelling itself, and less in additonal navigation when not really needed.
So I am willing to spend some funding for T4A (Tracks for Africa) but the additional costs of getting the info's into the GPS are not worth it.


So what I was looking for is a serie of waypoints on which I can check my direction along the Nile.
A PM will be welcomed.

Mapsource can be bought in it's cheapest version in a package called Trip and Waypoint manager. To download it for free: Download and install from garmin's site training center software and after that update mapsource.
As far as T4A is concerned. The main routes East and West Africa are on the map. South Africa, Namibia and Botswana are very, very detailed. The further north it is more or less the routes usually traveled. Northern Africa is, thanks to the Italians much more detailed again. T4A is not free BTW.
If you have Mapsource you can use free programmes (Google to search) to download Waypoints to your GPS.
You can also create Waypoints yourself with Google Earth.
