Taking a vehicle into Senegal
Hello,
I wondered if anybody has any experience of taking a car/4wd into Senegal to use, as opposed sell or just pass through? I will be driving to Senegal and living/working there for at least the next few years. Therefore I want to take a 4wd to use there, which I won’t be selling. Buying one there seems expensive and besides, I want to do the trip down across Morocco and Mauritania. Does anybody know if I need to reregister the vehicle with Senegalese number plates and any idea of the costs of this? I have plenty of info about the 5 year rule, carnet’s and difficulties crossing at Rosso, but not this, so any help or advice will be gratefully received. Many thanks, Simon |
I brought my car to Senegal and want to import it but that's not possible when it's older than 5 years. Now I drive in Senegal (Casamance) with Gambian numberplates. Every 10 days I have to go to the border for a new passavant.
So possible when your car is younger than 5 years. Older then 5 years not possible. Bram www.manekunda.nl |
Thanks for the reply Bram. Not what I wanted to hear, but I suspected as such. I will be returning to live nearby, in Abene, so maybe I can do similar. Did you drive from Europe to Gambia and register with Gambian plates there?

Yes, I drove the Land Rover from Holland to the Gambia. Joe from camping Sukuta arranged the import of the car very correct. For 5 years I drove with Dutch numberplates. But there were problems with the Gambian customs to park the car for more than 3 months in the Gambia. So I imported the car. In Senegal it is allowed to drive 40 days in one year with a foreign car. But in Seleti the customs don't make problems to give me a new passavant every time.
Only to drive in the area. Not when you want to go further than Diouloulou. This is the best solution when you want to have a car in Abene. Gambian numberplates and every 10 days to the border for a new passavant. And in Gambia the police don't give me stress anymore by checkpoints. |
