tire availability east coast.
 

I'm driving up the west end then east coast, starting in November on the Big KTM.
I thougt i was not going to bring tire's but now i'm not so sure anymore. What is available on this route? preferably a bit knobby of course :)
It seems silly to travel light, i dont need that much, and then strap 2 tire's on the back. But now that i'm looking, of course still from home i dont find many places that could have something available that will support a big dirt bike, i'l be riding at 300 to 350 kilo total weight i suppose, even when trying to be minimalistic.
I'l start the trip on a set of Desert's becouse they last.

You can get anything you want in Cape Town, but then nothing until Nairobi. There is a good KTM shop there in the "Karen" part of town. They will be useful to you as they have spares in stock. They will have tires, but man they are EXPENSIVE.

After Nairobi, nothing until maybe Cairo. I got a set there, but it was quite a project and I could not have done it without the help of the HU community there.

KTM dealer in Nairobi only had MT21s when I was there - no Mich Deserts.

Other options might include Dar es Salaam, as there was a group of expats there who brought in tyres from South Africa.

Aside from that, you might be stuck with Vee Rubbers, which are available in a few countries on route.

So i'm either looking on 15000km's on the same tire doing it really easy or riding with 2 big and heavy round's on the back?

I'l defenately visit the KTM dealer in Nairobi, the bike probably deserves it after that distance.

I dont know that Vee rubber but i guess it''s Weee and gone rubber :mchappy:

We are in Nairobi at the moment and yes, there is the KTM shop as well as another tyre shop in the city centre itself. It is called Cycle Importers and is located in Monrovia Street, just off Moi street. They have the Vee Rubber (about 90euro each) and we've been told by people in the know that they are actually quite good. Can't confirm that though! They also have Metzeler Enduro 3 but I can't recall the price.

We've done just over 12 000km on our Continental TKC 80 rear, and it looks good for at least another 3000km. And this was done on mostly tar, two up with luggage on a 600 Transalp! So, driving carefully, 15000 on decent tyres should not be a problem.

Cairo as far as we could find out is every bit the drag described above!
