Tyre availabilty down the east coast of Africa to Capetown
Hi..
Planning a trip from the UK-Capetown down the east coast. I'm guessing Ill need tyres when I get to Sudan/Ethiopia What is the general avalability of tyres on the east coast.. I'm running 21/18 .. Thanks |
I cheated...
I flew in first and had a supply drop, leaving tyres in Kenya and Malawi..
I would suggest contacting Wim at Wims Place in Addis. or Chris at Jungle Junction in Nairobi. If there's tyres in town they'll know where to get them. You may be able to get a set of TKC 80's if you're lucky. |
Flew in for a supply drop ?? HAHAH
Wish I had that kind of funding :) |
Usually you can get expensive tires (18+21) from Ian Duncan in Nairobi.
One set from Europe to Nairobi and one set from Nairobi to SA/Namibia is enough, at least on a twin. You will also find some Chinese tires, I don't recommend them. |
I'm currently in Nairobi and its possible to get the pirelli mt21 and metzeler enduro3's from the ina duncan the ktm dealer however they are currently at a premium, budget killing +£200 fee.
Vee Rubber are also available from cycle importers but I've not heard any decent reports about this brand. Apparently they're thai and more uitable for scooters or non-load earing bikes! My tyres are just about spent but I was hoping to make it to addis ababa, does anyone know of tyre availability in ethiopia and relative pricing? safe travels |
Well I was expecting to pay a premium for decent rubber...
Can anyone provide me with Duncans address , give me directions or gps coordinates ?? Thanks Ted |
My daughter needed a 21" front in Egypt, so we asked in various tyre shops in Cairo. In one, the owner's son rode a bike and we found a tyre on the road where most of the bike shops are.
Made in Taiwan but with maker's name proudly displayed on all the wrapping (so it wasn't a fake Pirelli or something), and it looked OK. About 15 GBPounds. Now in Khartoum and it still looks good. But we went into the Western Desert after Cairo. There are thousands of bikes ridden by the oasis-village locals all over the desert. They don't use knobblies, just road tyres and they do a lot better than us! In Farafra there are lots of bike shops, each one having a good display of new tyres, including knobblies, hanging from the ceilings. In Cairo we only found the one knobbly. In Farafra there was a choice. So I came to the conclusion if you want to ride on the local African roads, buy the tyres that all the locals use! PS. I took a spare rear tyre with me. Strapped on the back horizontally, it actually provides a neat extra luggage rack, sort of upper deck, so you can strap even more stuff on top! It's fitted now, and the discipline of now having to ditch the luggage that was strapped to it is definitely a good thing. |
