uganda and Keyna
Hello
I’m looking for off-beaten parks in Uganda and Kenya. I know that these countries are very popular (mainly in July/ August) but as much as possible I would like something not too crowded. I will be traveling in 4x4 with small kids and I want as much as possible to offroad. Mainly camping Something between Fort Portal (Uganda) and Masai Mara (Keyna). thanks |
Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda.
Kidepo Valley National Park, Uganda. Mt Elgon National Park, Kenya. Siawa Swamp NP, Kenya. Kakamega Forest, Kenya Lake Bogoria National Reserve, Kenya. Ruma National Park, Kenya. Lake Nakuru National Park, Kenya. Aberdares National Park, Kenya Meru National Park, Kenya. |
Thanks, but I’m gessing that this will not be “not too crowded” righ?

That’s what you asked for.
Apart from a very few places, East African parks and reserves are not “crowded”. For example, Kidepo Valley NP in Uganda, the latest visitor statistics show that the number of visitors per annum was 2,300. |
As Wazungu said already Kidepo is for sure the park which is visited less in Uganda (compared to parks like queen elizabeth and Murchison). Driving down from Kidepo via Moroto to Pian Upe Game Reserve will give you some nice scenery and off road. Pian Upe has less wildlife but is not visited much. In August the rainy season should be over (although it last forever this year) and the park should be accesible.

Kidepo NP is indeed the place to be, though it´s definately not between Fort-Portal and Masai Mara.
Karamoja as a region is totally fascinating due to the landscape and karamojong culture and should be as off-the-beaten track as you can go in Uganda. It´s also the most underdeveloped province in the whole of Uganda so bring all the supplies you need from Kampala if possible ! Interesting read for you --> Fly or Drive? | Kidepo.net If you have arrived in Kotido ( when driving up from Mbale -> Moroto -> from there to Kidepo its all pistes ) you should under no circumstances (!) miss Nakapirimoru. It´s the biggest Manyata ( traditional Karamojong village ) they say and when you arrive it´s mindblowing. Finding directions is a bit tricky as there are no signs but just ask for directions in Kotido. Its worth the hussle believe me ! Cheers, Chris |
