Visas for western Africa route - please update
This is for travelers headed north obviously: you can buy very easily a Nigerian visa in Buea, near Douala in Cameroon, in 20 minutes basically.
What you need: 2 photos, copy of passport and a fake hotel reservation as an LOI (well, I guess a genuine would work too ;-). And cash of course, it depends on the nationality, but for me (Swiss) it was 50'000 CFA (90 €). For British 60'000 and for Italians.. 218'000 ! But no interview, no question asked. They gave me one month validity, explaining it was starting from the day it was issued although when I crossed the border (in Banki, all the way to the north) they gave me one month starting from then. is this still the case? has anyone tried this and been rewarded recently??
thanks in advance. |
coming from the south, where did you get your Cameroon visa?

Online Nigerian Visa problems
So the Nigeria visa is now only payable online. Has anyone had trouble paying for this?
I have filled out the application and the payment service is a terrible website called "Innovate1 Services" which only accepts "verified by visa" or mastercard. https://www.innovate1services.com/ I have 3 different valid visa cards in my name. None of them work. I have tried from two different computers with all 3 cards, trying each card multiple times. It says 'payment unsuccessful: Error: "attempts processing performed"' for two of the cards. The other card just crashes the website. Customer service is India-based and when I can get them on the phone (difficult) they just repeat that the name on the application must match the name on the card, which it does. Has anyone else done this successfully, or had any problems? |
were did you apply, was in the capital of Benin?
|
No, Dakar, Senegal. The embassy will work with me since I work here.
I'm trying to "register" one of my cards now. Hopefully that will solve the problem. |

I can't comment exactly on the success because still I am fighting to pay the visa fee. When that goes through (hopefully next two days) I will see if it is accepted or if they have more hoops to jump through. |
Cheers for the heads up. What is your plan? Are you going further south? I'm going all the way to South Africa.

Well getting the visa in Dakar fell apart. 2 weeks of work for them to finally say "no residency card, no visa". I told you that the first day I came in! But I digress...
I figured out the problem with the payment: "Verified by Visa" and "Mastercard SecureCode" are extra security services offered by some banks issuing Visa or Mastercard, but not all. You have to check with your bank to see if you have either of these services. IF none of your cards are "Verified" or "SecureCode" do not try to register your card to get around this. They will be registered just fine but you will get the same error. You CAN use a friend/family's card. On the embassy website they specifically say the card must match the applicant, but if you scroll down they say it is possible to pay with a different card but you must register it first. When you register the card: If the bank statement does not have the card number (like for debit cards), scan/photograph the front of your debit card and copy the image onto the bank statement somewhere. They say they will email you when the card is registered, but they don't, you have to check the website to find out. There is officially a two days processing time, but if you call customer service they will 'register' the card on the spot so you can use it immediately. Here is an explanation of the error codes as far as I could understand them. The hilarious 'attempts processing performed' error, 'Card has been used too many times' error or the website just crashing = the card is not "verified" or "securecode". "Authentication failed" = call the bank and tell them to allow the payment. "Issuer declined" = your friend's card isn't authorized for international use So if you're having trouble, maybe that will help. Hey Pat, did you sense that getting the Nigeria visa without a carnet would have been a problem? Planning on being there in a couple months.

It was the first thing he asked for. I'm not sure if it would have been a problem or not though. My mate is currently trying to get his and has been turned away in Accra they asked for a carnet also but they also wanted to see his residency for Ghana. He will try in Togo for it. So at this stage the easiest place is still in Mali Bamako.
|
Thanks for the info. I'll try for it wherever I can.

Just to update.
My mate got his Nigerian visa in Benin. No were near as easy as it was for me in Mali but after filling out everything they wanted he got a full 1 month visa. It was more expensive than what I paid in Mali. I paid 37000cfa his was 100000cfa. They said they charge what ever it costs them to enter your country. But from my experience Bamako Mali was by for the easiest place to get the Nigerian visa. |
Will arrive in Bamako in three days and ask for visas.
What is it when you write about a carnet? |
They asked for a copy of my carnet when I made my application.
|
No carnet needed in Bamako. 40000cfa for the Nigerian visa and got it the next day
|
Just trying to sort out a Nigerian visa for myself but flying in & out ... & STUCK :(
Am I right in thinking that I MUST visit a Nigerian Embassy once the online process is done? I'm unable to get to Paris which would be the closest one, my second option is to fly into Accra and go to the Nigerian Embassy there, if they'll accept me as I'm not a resident ... Or am I barking up the wrong tree totally? Can it just be done online & received on arrival at the airport? Thanks for any insights |
Latest experience.
Bamako, Mali. 65000CFA, 1 month, no carnet asked, but asked for driving license and motorcycle passport. It tooks two days. On the second day counsil went out to speak with me and started to asking weird questions like "you wrote in the application form that you heading to Capetown. What is interest for my country to let you in?" (and I hardly doubt that it was bribe request because all that circus was in front of other visitors and employees). I was unprepared for that kind of crap but remembered that everybody usually visiting Calabar, so I told something like "I want to visit Calabar and famous touristic places there". Council said that I should come back on the next day, so he will think what to do with me. Suddenly on the next day I came in and got my passport (and other documents) back with visa and without any questions. |

Can this Nigerian visa still be got in Benin?
Or in fact, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso or Niger? I am getting mine in Bamako, but my girlfriend is flying from Spain to Ghana and we are really struggling to find somewhere to get it for her. It seems like a nightmare trying to get it in Spain, if we can't get it in Spain then we need some sort of back up. Any ideas? |
Did around Africa last year. We got none of the visas before hand, matter of fact, getting visas in Finland where we hardly have any embassies would have been impossible anyway.
We got Nigerian visa in Burkina last year, no much hassle. Few weird questions. Accra have been famous place for overlanders to get visas for countries like Nigeria, DRC, Angola for quite a while. |

Mauritania is 140 now? was 120 at border a few months ago
I would get Guinea in in Bissau for $50usd (30,000CFA) 1 month multiple entry. Issued same day. The guy is a bit corrupt saying 1 month is only single entry but a bit of pressure and he crumbles. Good to know about the Sierra Leone and Liberia visas, I would probably get them where you got them eddyboi |

It means that you can go to the Benin consulate in Barcelona for the VTE visa. If my memory is correct, based on their website the last time i checked, the cost is 120euro when applying during the regular visa requests hours (Wednesday morning?). Outside thoses hours there is an extra charged of 20euro for urgent processing. Total cost 140 euro for anytime processing Patrick |
I regularly get mine from Barcelona, brilliant service, 100€ if within their time frame.
They do a multiple entry VTE, which you can't usually get in Ouaga ... so it's even more worthwhile! Sometimes a friend of mine takes my passport to Barcelona for me, other times I've used the postal service & it's worked perfectly with a quick turnaround! |

Has anybody successfully managed to get a Nigerian visa from a West African country other than Mali? Were driving down but are hoping to stick as close to the coast as possible and would love avoid the large detour up to Mali just for a visa!

We managed to get Ghana today in Abidjan, against any hope. We are in town anyway and thought it worth a try.
US passports. Others may not fare as well. 30.000 XOF each for 3 day service. 20.000 more for express 24 hour. We chose express so they couldn't change their minds, but we were offered the full menu of single or multi, 1 2 3 6 or 12 month durations. Not a single question or issue raised, it went smooth. We only ever dealt with the receptionist, who we found bureaucratic but not unfriendly. We stacked the deck high for ourselves. We brought: Nice, professional clothing. A letter explaining that we did not apply at home due to our plans changing enroute. 2 application forms pre filled and perfect, no errors 2 passport photos each 2 hotels listed as our references A fake booking.com reservation for Accra A financial statement showing ample funds An email quote from a shipping company in Accra for the car. We oozed politeness, but only said we wished to submit our application. We didnt use the word "request" once. ...And they are in hand. 30 day tourist visas, with a 90 day validity (ie 90 days to use the visa, 30 day stay allowed) Xmas came 51 weeks early apparently. :D Bonne chance out there! - Mike |

Not sure if this is the right thread, but for anyone using the Entente Visa (VTE):
We got ours in Barcelona. (Nov 2016) We used it to enter Cote d'Ivoire from Guinea-Conakry, but used an unusual route (Lola to Danane) -- no troubles. Exiting Cote d'Ivoire, we again took an unusual route, that of Abengorou via Niable to Kofikrom, then on to Kumasi. Our Ghana visa held up, and this is a very relaxed border. The unexpected bit: We were able to re-use our VTE Entente visa to enter Togo from Ghana on the coast road (Aflao - Lome) with no issues. We filled out the provided Fiche de Police form and supplied our Visa number from the VTE, and it was un-questioned. When exiting Togo, again on the coast road (between Aneho and Grand Popo), the Togolese officials told us that our visa was "not true", but we were exiting, so we laughed and told them "we paid true money for it", and basically did not take them seriously. After some deliberations in french, and clearly not impressed with us, they stamped us out. Benin did not question the "not true" Entente visa, however, it was the Benin embassy that supplied it, so we did not expect problems. Some notes: 1. The Benin embassy wrote "plusiers" on our visa, for multiple-entry. This is not correct, as once you leave the entente region, the visa is used -- but we appreciated the consulate in barcelona adding a little extra punch to our bluff. :) 2. Our friends right behind us entering Togo also had an Entente visa, and it was not accepted. We are American, and our friends are European, so I am unclear what would have been different, but there may be some favoritism going on with the officials. A lot of them congratulated us on Trump (argh) 3. Our VTE was never "stamped" or otherwise cancelled by Cote d'Ivoire. I don't know if this is because of the abnormal border entry officials not following procedure, but it is a possibility. Worst case, we would have taken a 7-day togo visa at the border for 10,000 CFA, and a 2-day transit visa for Benin (which can be extended in Cotonou), however, we've somehow lucked out with our VTE and it has provided value for money. It can be done. I hope it works for anyone else using this plan. :D Cheers, - Mike |

Maybe not what this thread is meant for, but: I might fly in to West Africa from Colombia later this year. I won´t be able to get any visas in advance so I wondering if it´s possible to get visa on arrival in any country in West Africa? I have EU-passport. Cheers...
Edit: As far as I understand: 1) It´s possible to get a seven days visa at arrival at the Airport in Lomé, Togo? True? 2) It is possible to get a e-visa to Cote d'ivoire (Can anyone verify this?) 3) Senegal was visa free last time I was in West Africa (2009-10). Then I heard a visa was necessary. But I read this on wikitravel: "Biometric Visas are no longer required". I don´t get it. Can I get a visa at arrival or not? :-) 4) Gambia Have I forgotten any? I have to check up Liberia and Guina too.. :-) |

You actually came through town & went out via Niable?! (best turkey lunch in the region about 800m before the border)!!! Can't believe I missed you!!! The Ghanaian border is called 'Oseikojokrom' referred to as OKK regularly, the next town is Debiso! The Police at Niable (actually from Abengourou) won't 'cancel' the VTE ever, they're usually very correct on this point, it shouldn't ever be cancelled. As for your VTE entries; as you know I often travel on the same Barcelona issued one, but I'm on an EU passport (Irish). The 'plusieurs entrees' hasn't been a problem for me & I've used it all over the region as a multiple entry. The VTE issued in Ouaga isn't a multiple entry but single entry, which might have been the difference between you & the others you met dependant on where they got their VTE. The Trump support astonishes me, so many are pro-Trump despite the fact I explain what he's setting out to do, they see him as some great future ... :helpsmilie: :offtopic: |
Ouagadougu (Burkina Faso) does not issue the Visa Entente any more! They said it's dead. At least in Burkina and at the Moment. Check iOverlander for the latest Info.
Maybe Barcelona still works. But we managed to successfully apply for the Nigerian Visa in Ouagadougu. Easy Application. Fee varies accros Nationalities. Sweden and Poland shall be 48.000 CFA. German Passport is 70.000 CFA. Takes 48 Hours. We just left Ghana for Burkina Faso: https://facebook.com/afrikadrimslar/ |
But do they still accept it at the border?
Did you go to the Passport Service center? |
I guess they still accept it at the border. Probably only don't issue it any more.
Yes, we have been to the Service des Passeports in Ouagadougou. Some weeks ago they issued it here without problems. Since a few days they say it's dead. A US couple tried it a few days before us, they were told the same. But i guess it can change any time again, Africa! |
We got Mali and Burkina in Belgium, then on the road:

Angola visa info
Hello, I'm getting ready for my Africa crossing from Italy to South Africa by motorcycle. i'm just looking for any visas information and, about Angola ambassy here in Italy, it seems that Angola visa must be issued only from Italy. Does anybody konws if it's true? Because I read the previous posts and someone got it in different African Cities. I feel a little bit confused.
|
I think you may get a longer duration from Italy - ie: longer validity (time to get there) and duration once in the country. You'd want 2 months validity, imo.
Otherwise, afaik most apply in Accra (with good validity/duration), or very short transit visas in Pointe Noire. But maybe Italy/Angola have their own arrangements? |
You can get the visa for Angola in Pointe-Noire. They do issue 30 days visa. It takes a few days. In 2017, they were accepting visa applications on Tuesday and Thursday from 9h30 to 13h30. Avoid going during Angola and Congo holidays, it could be a long wait (about 2 weeks). I did not have the patience to wait so I got my visa in DRC (Matadi). I did not go to Cabinda. Another option is to try to get it in Dolisie in Congo (You may be lucky).
Patrick |
Thank you very much Chris and Pat, it's true I will never get in Angola in 2 months (visa validity), I must got it during the travel. I think this is the only way possible to cross Angola. I heard about a lot of travelers got the transit visa in Matadi, a 5 days validity visa just for transit. And a lot of travelers here in this forum got the visa in Accra e point noire. So ...somehow i'll get it too.
|
Matteocap, i would avoid taking all the visas in advance unless you want to race to Cape Town.
If you lose or someone lose your passport during your trip, you will have to pay again for some visas. Here is an example: i went to the Cameroon embassy in Dakar to get my visa. They kept my passport and told me to come back the next day. I show up the next day at the embassy. I'm waiting in line for my passport. There is a local in front of me who is also here to pick up passports. They gave him about 5 passports and he leaves. Then it's my turn and they don't find my passport. A while later, the guy who was in front of me comes back. I see him giving my passport back to the embassy staff and he said he is missing one. I could have lost my passport! |
Visa document
I'd like to know wich documents could be required in some African ambasies in my route form marocco to South Africa. If i need some special documents, I already have my passport, yellow fever cart, document of identification, carnet de passage, driving license, all motorbike documents include the green card.

Hey Bartosz!
Sorry we never made it to Poland to see you, but time was against us. I'm starting to do all of the plans for Africa. We plan to enter Morocco in early March. What are you planning? - Gino (moto brother from Valdivostok) Based on what I'm seeing, maybe it makes sense for us (US passports) to get our Mali visa ahead of time and all of the others along the way. Going Morocco to South Africa, so if anyone advises that I get other visas while at home, please let me know. I appreciate all the help with locations, time tables and prices that everyone has already provided. Gino |

Nigeria Visa Update
Unfortunately, we were not able to get our Nigerian tourist visa in Morocco. We did everything we could, including writing a letter to the Ambassador and Consul. I spoke with the Consul today and she was adamant in her refusal to issue a visa to people who are not Moroccan citizens/residents. Even though I explained that we left the US 9 months ago and, at the time, did not know we would be visiting Nigeria (which is actually true. I guess I didn’t pay enough attention in geography class.) She mentioned that an Australian tried to get a visa here a few weeks ago and she told him the same thing..Wish I'd known that a week ago. Her only recommendation was to return to the US and get the visa. I've read a few people saying that Burkina Faso wasn't issuing them anymore based on "new rules". Probably better to just get this one before you leave home. We will try again in Dakar and let everyone know what happens. Gino |

No VTE any more? Only e-visa for Benin
Quote:
I had email exchanges with Benin embassy in Barcelona in Nov '18 saying (a) they don't do the VTE any more (visa entente, they referred to it as - think it's the same thing), (b) they don't offer visas in Benin embassies any more (I took it they meant generally, not just in Barca) and c) the only visa now for Benin is an e-visa. |

You go to the main passport office in the morning and collect the same afternoon." -Dan |
Yes, the VTE restarted at the Service des Passeports on the Bobo road at the beginning of the month!
Fingers crossed it continues |
I once applied for the VTE in Ouaga but was refused because I had only a three day transit visa to Burkina, bought at the embassy in Bamako for 24000 CFA.
They demanded a full visa which was then 48000 CFA. I hear they now offer visa on arrival at Ouaga airport for 94000 CFA. |

Nigeria Visa on Arrival
It's possible to obtain a visa on arrival for Nigeria to enter at the Seme border crossing.
An approval letter must be acquired first before arriving at the border. To obtain the approval letter, either:
Arrive at Seme with printed copies of the approval letter. Note, there are two letters that look similar, and both should be printed. The Immigration Controller needs to sign/authorise this, so there may be a wait of an hour at the border. To obtain the visa, you must be escorted by an immigration officer to Lagos airport. For Biking Over Yonder, with a motorcycle, and others, this meant the immigration officer rode pillion on the motorcycle. A return taxi fare of 25,000 NGN was required for the immigration officer to return to the Seme border crossing with paperwork completed. At the airport, you are escorted through different offices and eventually arrive at the visa on arrival office. This is located where flight passengers disembark and arrive in the terminal, which is before passport control. In the visa on arrival office, you pay for the visa using a VISA card. Note: mastercard and cash are not accepted. Alternatively, you can pay online and present the visa payment receipt (and/or visa acknowledgement slip). Be sure to pay for visa on arrival (business) and not tourist visa, even though you may be travelling as a tourist. This information was learnt from friends who crossed the border before me. I just followed in their footsteps. I've also added the above to wikioverland.org/Nigeria and the West Africa Travellers group on Facebook. Hope it helps! |

Another approval has been obtained less than a week ago for US$100 through a person with their details on West Africa Travellers. Think three of them went through using this method if I remember reading correctly!
There's always a way through :D |
