West Africa route
Hello,
For those of you who have completed this route to Cape Town, when would you consider the best month to start, if for example, you have only three months to complete the journey. My main consideration is the weather (Congo) etc. Also, common sense tells me that the best bike for the journey would be a Honda 250 CRF, However, I'm lacking in common sense. I would be interested to hear from riders that have completed this route on a GS 800 or equivalent. Regards |
Choosing start date and making it all work in 3 months may be a challenge, but others will no doubt be able to advise.
All I would say is that late September (when we did it) is very very hot in Sahara/Mauritania! I did the trip on my r1150gs so you could certainly do it on an 800…..except perhaps the muddy DRC bit which I avoided by putting the bike on a pirogue in Cabinda (Angola) which then crossed the river Congo to Soyo (also Angola) whilst we took a 15 minute $30 flight as foreigners were not allowed on the pirogue. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...469eab2de6.jpg Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Rain could be funny between Cameron and DR Congo! Depends if you like a competition or a relaxed ride. Congo wet seasons are March/April and October/November; I've travelled in these seasons and it takes care and time, but is doable. |
