What time of year to go Africa South to North?

Hi,
My friend and I are planning to drive trough Africa on two BMW 650'S. We will be leaving from SA and working our way North via the East side. We plan to do it in 4-6 months. I am working in the UK at the moment and will only have enough money in FEB 2006 SO we will only get on the road by April 2006. Would like to know if this is a good time to go? Rain/heat/cold/monsoons? Would appreciate your thoughts and expertise on this topic.

Thanks
Wynand

wynand,

I left SA in April 2004 and took 6 months via the East coast to cairo. I found this to be the ideal time of year as the weathr was generally dry and pleasant, summer in the tropics is hot and wet and malarial. North East Africa was very hot though, but bearable.
Enjoy!
