Where to stay in Addis?
I need a good&cheap accomodation in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
A clean bed & HOT shower is enough... A nice place to meet other travellers would be nice, too... Who can recommend me anything like that? Silke |
wims holland house.
go to the train station, right in front, take a left. follow the dirt road then take the second left. |

You're in Addis in a few weeks?
If this is the first week of November - we will meet @Wim's, I think! :-) Silke |
Can recommend Addis View hotel. Its on the old road to British Embassy. New ring has been built and has no access off to the hotel. Not too cheap though but clean and tidy.
To meet fellow travellers any of the bars or cheap hotels in Piassa are a good bet. Most get a mention in Lonley Planet or Rough Guides or Bradt. ubdai |

After staying nearly 1 week @Wim's I can report...
- food is good - location is quiet&safe BUT: - internet there is far too slow to open any e-mail account. I have been trying several times and it never really worked. There is faster internet available in Addis, but Wim does not pay the extra cost, so you better go to Ras Hotel, not too far away and internet there is WiFi and cheap. - shower is only cold (if water is available) - shared bathrooms are more than dirty (use the Restaurant's toilet instead, they're kept very clean) - don't expect to get a breakfast when you're leaving before 9 a.m.... - if you rent the only room with bathroom and hot shower, don't expect it to be your private bathroom - Wim lets other people have a shower there while you're not there and will charge you the full fare for private bathroom... - dont expect that "You can make your own food here" means "kitchen use". It just means they allow you to have a piece of outside bought bread within their compound - don't expect 24hrs running water - the tank is far too small and generally empty before returning "home" from citycenter - don't expect Wim to be really helpful - he's old now, half deaf and half blind - don't expect pillow cases or warm blankets - they assume you have your own sleeping bag... - keep in mind that they will do your laundry - but no underwear... - no reduction for longterm stays, prices vary from guest to guest... So if you're sleeping in your own tent, dont need water and want good food (Pizza & Burger), Wim is the right place. If you want more for the same money: Just before reaching Wim's Holland House, there is the Hotel Restaurant "Buffet de la Gare" with safe parking and clean rooms, 24hrs water&electricity, warm water also available (if you wait a little bit). The price is exactly the same, but the really private bathroom is much cleaner and the watertank is huge! The staff is friendly and the attached italian restaurant is very good. There is reduction for long-term stays. Then just walk the few meters to Wim's for meeting others and party. That's what I would do next time in Addis. Silke |
I had a look at the Baro (Piazza Region). Not good any more... Just across the street from the Baro there is a new, very clean & nice guesthouse with parking, laundry, some green - a double room with nice bathroom, TV, hot water etc. is 250 Birr (12 EUR) - breakfast and food just across the street at the Baro HotelRestaurant :-)

awesome!
Thanks for sharing. Coming from the south we thought it would be somehting like Jungle Junction who actaully have everything they say they do and more... We'll be avoiding wim's then. |
I'm at wims place now...
Its not bad... Wim is friendly and its quiet and safe here. Not like the rest of Addis. Sure, the internet is a no go but there is a nice bar and great bar food. (not the cheapest though).. Ill be checking out the Buffet de la gare later on for dinner. 50 birr for a tent and 70 for a room (only three rooms and hes full)... Plenty of internet in town at hotels, restaurants but im not that bothered really. Even if you dont stay at wims, its deffo worth hanging out here. !! |

I stayed there 1 week and have seen several guests paying those prices. And I did so, too. But, you're right: it's a good place to hang around - but there's plenty of places where you get much more for your money! Silke |
