1990 Suzuki DR800 Front Sprocket

Some ideas ??

I replaced the oil seal on the front sprocket and two things came up:

1. Should the raised face/lip be facing the engine or facing out? I fitted it facing out because the part numbers are on that face and that is an old convention. I also noted the half-sun logo and thought that may also mean to face out. Looking at the manual I'm not so sure.

2. Looking at the parts diagram I see a sprocket damper. This was missing on my bike. What are the ramifications and do I need to get one before I take the DR800 for a test ride?

Thanks

Shane

the raised area on the sprocket would normally face inwards (towards engine) on DR models (it does on both the 650's Ive owned)

However if you do not have a damper the sprocket may sit out too far on the shaft and not be inline with the chain, which will not do the chain any good or the output shaft bearings long term.

I would get hold of a laser and line it up along the length of the chain (inline with the rear sprocket) and make sure the front sprocket is inline with everything, if not then try to get hold of damper or fabricate one or make up a spacer to keep everything inline.

The damper looks like it just sits between the retaining plate and sprocket and just eases the big gobs of torque the big thumper puts out.

You can buy one here:

I see from the schematic the DR has an oil seal retainer, make sure you have one fitted as without one they can spit the seals out and dump the oil all over the back tyre
