1993 DR650-2004 DR650 same transmission?

Hi Everyone,

The transmission on my 2004 North American DR650 has broken down and needs a complete replacement, which is proving hard to find in Chile/Argentina. Ive found a North American 1993 DR650 which I could cannibalize: does anyone know if the two transmissions are the same? Any help is much appreciated, thanks!

Alex

Hi Alex,

Unfortunately the 2 bikes are totally different with different engines and transmissions, if it was a 96 or later it would be almost identical.

Where exactly in South America are you?

Use the "connect" tab to contact the local HUBB community and see if anyone has any other leads, if you are in the North (Columbia) the police use DR650's but further South there are not so many around.

Hopefully someone else will chime in an be able to help.

If possible, try to disassemble trans and find out exactly which parts are needed. If not too much damage inside, perhaps you can just replace broken parts? Look them up on on line fiche if you can.
If bad internal damage then you'll need (possibly) a entire engine. (very hard to find and $$$$$ to ship to Chile) If that is the case, then best to part out bike for junk and walk away.

As Gipper says, Pre '96 is totally different bike. No compatibility far as I know.

Go onto a few DR650 sites (and DR threads) ASK for help! Also, contact Pro Cycle in Oregon. Ask if they can help out sourcing parts.
ProCycle have lots of DR bits and pieces and a lot of knowledge.

Trans failure on the DR have happened to quite a few riders. If internal damage is not bad, then repair may be possible. Several guys have done it,
replacing only damaged gears and such.

Ask for help here:

The ADV Rider link above is a HUgE thread in Thumpers section, (over 100,000 posts) but very helpful DR guys, lots of DR knowledge, parts and more ideas. Just post up and ASK FOR HELP!

You will have to join above forums to post questions (free to join).

Good luck!

It's usually 3rd gear the explodes , but they were improved in '03 , if yours is an '04 then maybe you got a leftover tranny (aka, the bike was made in'03 yet)

Close to your location might be the "Suzuki Freewinds" used by the Colombian police. Maybe call a few moto shops up there and see if you can get something shipped?
