DL650 Vstrom Switched supply
 

Hi Guys

Searched under DL650, vstrom, electrical supply etc but nothing so far so I have to ask the question

I need to find a convenient switched supply to run my Gerbings gloves and TomTom rider.
Someone mentioned using the plug supplied for factory fitt heated grips???
Also a pretty basic general question but do I need to use a relay if the supply is switched by the ignition???
Bit of an electro mechanical numpty I'm afraid

Hi Alan,
Go on V-Strom Forum - powered by Tex Arts loads of V-Strom info.
I got a kit from Twisted Throttle which gives you several pickup points and uses a relay, I fitted mine under the seat next to the battery. The kit comes with full instructions to tap into the existing wires and was an easy fit.

Anything that draws a reasonable current (and I would guess that your heated gloves are in that category) is best run though a relay (and fuse!!!) to reduce the load on the ignition switch contacts. Make sure you use a fuse and put it as close to the battery as possible. That way if the wire to the relay or to the output get squashed or damaged enough to short, the fuse will blow and the bike won't catch fire..... don't ask me how I know.....

You can put the fuse box any place dry you like it will be ok. Drilling in the fering and running powerlets (the BMW stile power outlet) will keep you lay out clean and dryer. I put a car cigar lighter in near the battery to power a air pump and add a more universal power outlet.

It's like putting a lobster pot in the sea, leave a question here for a couple of days then come back and reap the rewards. The internet is so cool.

Anyway, questions answered always throw up new questions but I will lean on common sense from here on in.
Probably run a fused supply from battery into relay then into small fuse board.
Halfords seemed pretty useless so will try Maplins (UK) and then mount/hide the whole ugly shebang inside left hand side panel as there seems to be plenty of space there and keep underseat clear for things I need regular access to.

Is there an alternative plug system for gloves, jackets etc. to the ridiculously outdated, oversized cigar lighter set up we all put up with?
I would even prefer to use bullet connectors in Vaseline, much smaller and less likely to shake themselves to pieces

Often called the BMW style plug or Powerlet, is a slim power connector seen as an upgrade to old cigar lighter style power plug. They are not watertight and your gear needs to have that plug on it to work not as universal as the old cigar lighter style. If your fighting vibration you can go with a SEA style older and used in one form or another in most cars and bikes. Used in battery chargers, tankbag power supplies and under fering cables and the like. not as good looking as the Powerlet plug looks like an unfinished project to me but vary reliable and cheap if clean and dry. I have one right next to my cigar lighter under my seat.

Going to purchase the above and mount it under side panel with a live supply IN from battery (via inline fuse and relay) looped in and out of supply side then take live supply OUT to various devices.
For ground I thought to take a thick black wire from battery down to fuse board with a loop bullet connector at either end and simply fit similar loop bullet to all the other ground wires and bolt them together, smother with vaseline and cable tie to frame
Make sense or am i breaking one of the fundamental laws of auto-wiring in my ignorance?

Just in case you don't know, DO NOT earth to the V-Strom frame, all earths must go back to the battery.

Good chance that I would have done exactly that!

You can try a marine supply (boats and things) for the fuse box and plugs. Touratech will have something like it to for a bit more money. UK has lots of places to get parts from try a Google search.

Check out easternbeaver.com. He sells kits especially for the DL 650. I just ordered the wiring kit for the Centech AP-2. It allows connections for switched and non switched power supply. Just use the eb wiring kit and install should be a snap. No fussing with connectors.

Thanks for the information guys but I stopped reading here as I set about the job.
All the components i'm using seem good and not too expensive. The fuse box fits perfectly in a vacant bracket under the RH side panel on bike and the inline fuse holder fits neatly under the battery strap. Will post pics if anyone interested
As I an no electro mechanic apart from info I have collected here I thought this link may be useful to others after I bought a relay from Maplins but had no idea which pins did what as the vague sketch on top of the unit bears no relation to the pins sticking out the other end. This pdf explains it all
