DR650 - No Spark Plug - Please HELP!

Hi Every1,

I bought a Suzuki Dr650 year 1992 on Ebay about a month ago. After the bike arrived without a battery and after my legs became purpul from kickstarting for hours with no success - I have installed a new battery, charged it, and the head lights are working but no Spark.

I tested the kill engine switch and the bikes stand switch which seem to be working fine. I used a multimeter to check for continuity at the wires leading from the CDI to the coil and after kicking the kickstart it seams that voltage starts to increase.

Does this seem like a coil problem? Could it be the generator too?

Also, the bike cna go into first gear and neutral but nothing higher than that, is there a mechanism in Suzuki that prevents from shifting above first gear if the bike ISNT RUNNING?

Thanks in advance,
Steven

All (well most) motorcyle gear boxes are constant mesh - meaning this can happen in all motorcycles - you may not even be able to engage first gear from time to time - just rock teh bike backwards and forwards to rotate teh gears a little and it should engage the gear you are after.

OK. Now - how do you know there is no spark? Sorry but the above demonstrates a lack of experience with motorcycles so possibly you are not doing teh 'right' thing there either? No insult intended just trying to clarify.. and thumper talk will know more about DRs than I.

Thanks for all the replies about the DR650

Hi All,,

Thanks for all the replies. A few clarifications though, I did own about 10 bikes in my life time, and even used to overhaul 2 stroke engines (well only the top end).

Also, when I bought the bike on Ebay, the shipper took the battery out (supposly) and the seller send me a new battery - so I did charge it out of the bike (so probably no fault there...:)

In regard to the garbox, trust me when I say that before writing my original post, not only that I draged the bike forward and back but also took it down a hill in first gear in order to try and start it (that's before realizing there was no spark in the plug, and Yes I do hold the plug against the cylinder head to ground it ....) The bike juts wouldnt shift to anything but neutral and first gear ONLY.

My experiences with Ebay to this point were actully mostly satisfactory. This is the frist time is really received a "lemon".

I almso used a VOM/Multimeter to check continuity/resistance and managed to isolate things up to the coil (that distributed the spark to the two plugs on the DR650). However, I did not check for resistance from the plastic "boot" to the connection on the coil - not sure what I'm supposed to read there.

Also the bike's stand switch was bypassed (wire wise) by the seller to begin with.

And yes, next time I will stick with buying only electronics on Ebay - Motorcycles I will make sure I can hear, smell, sniff.....before I buy...:)

THis is a great forum, thanks again,
Sagi
