Help Needed On DR650
recently keep experiencing suddenly lost of power even throttling.. no matter how hard i twist the throttle.. also no power( no firing) then need to off engine.. then start again,, then alrite.. any guys knows what is wrong? ?
tot is water in tank.. then when to service the carb.. after servicing.. still have.. then somemore i didnt switch to reserve tank. so shldnt be water floating around.. could it be CDI, spark plug cable or iginition problem? pls help.. as it quite dangerous when traveling at high speeds n busy traffic.. |
How long does the engine run ok before it starts to die, and how long does it take to fire up again (short, like seconds, or minutes?). And does the engine die suddenly, or take a few seconds...:confused1:
|
it didnt die on me.. i was riding. then suddenly the bike just loses its rpm. even when i was throttling... then i had to off the bike and start the bike to let it be back to normal..
the problem could continue all the way ( even when my bike come to full stop n i was throttling ) unless i restart the bike.. |
Sounds like a fuel problem - carb float? jets? fuel lines and filters? That's what I would start with anyway....
Good luck with it. Sean |
my bike is fitted with FCR carb.. just serviced it when encounter the problem.. thought it might solved it.. but it didn't.. so now quite headache about it..
some says is CDI, some says coil.. |
My instinct points toward the rather complicated carb.
Get good mechanic to take it OFF the bike ... |
Tank vent?
Also check that the sir vent in the fuel tank cap is working. If it's blocked then the bike will run for a while until there is a partial vacuum in the tank, stopping the flow to the carb. I'm not sure how the vent works in the DR, but I have seen this happen.

This is a good point .... always good

I think Nigel meant the Air Vent .:confused1: |
Typo king
Opps! Air Vent. Yeah, the keys are too close together for my pudgy fingers....

You should be able to measure the rate of fuel flowing into the carburettor.
Take off the float bowel (or drain screw if you have one). Put a container (old ice cream container, PET bottle, anything that fits) under the drain point. Open the petrol cock and time say 2 minutes .. you may need to empty the container into a larger thing. As long as you keep the total quantity of fuel so you can measure it later... The total quantity of fuel that flowed over 2 minutes should be of the order of at least 2 litres ... less than that and you have a problem. If it passes this test then the fault lies elsewhere .. eg Blockage inside a carby jet Electrics (side stand switch, CDI, Coil etc) |
but if there is a stop of fuel flow to the carb, the bike would just died off right? unless there is fuel flow, but the quantity not enough to substain to keep the bike from reving?

Reg & Rec
Hi
My partners bike had the exact same symptons, i did all the same checks it turnned out to be the Regulator & Rectifier you may want to try this as i've now heard of the same fault on other DRs. Skip |
I would look at the carb first .... it's cheaper

Hi mollydog
My partners DR was a 1997 se from the united states, you are right in saying to check the fuel and carb first i did this over a 4 month period while on the road in SA, and could not find the problem it was only after having a beer with a guy from the USA, he told me about this fault and said that he had had the same problem. I bought my DR new in 07 in Australia after 25000ks i noticed that the Reg & Rec had come loose, i think that vibration may play a part in the problem i rubber mounted mine just to be on the safe side. Skip :palm::Beach: |
I've seen guys fooled by a bad coil wire
