Suzuki katana 600 ELECTRICAL PROBLEM!

hi guys i have a 99 suzuki katana 600 i just bought this afternoon. it was delivered on a trailer , but he drove it this morning. after it got off the trailer, he fired it up 3 different times and rode it, letting me hear the gears, etc.

i drove it inside, played with the lights for about 2 minutes, and when i tried to fire it up, it instantly dimmed (my console) and it wouldn't even begin to try and start.

i went upstairs for 20 minutes, came down, same problem... but when i tried to start it it make a "jab" sound... not a whining up, just a short jab. i tried starting it 3-4 times, before i lost everything.

i tried jumping it with my car (which was NOT running), and i put my pos on bike/car, then when i tried putting the neg on the bike (which was NOT on the car yet) it sparked, and i've lost 100% everything including my clock.

i used a test light, showing good on the battery, and good on my fuses, but i tried again, and the fuses are no good.

any help/suggestions?

sounds like you managed to cross-wire it somehow, probably blew a diode. I did this to a friends Kwak three years ago, would love to tell you how to fix it but the Kwak in question is still under a tarp in his garden...

I have had problems like that with a few bikes myself.

1. have you checked that the wires to the battery terminals are screwed tight? If not it can cause erradic behaviour.

2. Battery is bad, get a new one and charge it before installing. This is pretty common and anyways a battery is a common thing to change when you get a new used bike.

Sounds like battery stuff.

:welcome:

Pull the battery and check that first not just it has a charge but if the polls are right and has fluid if you can. See how old it is more than a year and the guy you got it from not riding it and its probly better to get a new one go to batter shop if you have one near have them check the old one. Go to auto parts shop or Radio shack get a cheap (or expensive) multi tester good to have any way learn how to use it if you dont.

Now for the bad news
1 you may have blown a main fuse and bike shops may not be open Monday.

2 the bikes ground (earth if you like) is not alwas the frame its the negative termanal its a bike not a car some times the frame dose have a negative on it.

3 having someone at the bike shop run down a problem like this can be pricey

4 if its not the battery (even if it is) you may have a short in your system hunting it down can be a pain.

5 running your lights that long on a old battery may have drained it its a vary small battery

6 one of your batterys sound like the poles are reversed

Good news

1 it sounds like a old drained battery

2 battery are cheap and you need to new one any way

3 looking for the problem will get you to know your new bike better

4 your bike can be tested with a car battery it wont know

Now the sparking thing has me stumped. You puled power from some place.
