List of luggage space in liters on your bike.
 

Hola everyone!
I would like to see the luggage space (in liters) you have taken on a 3 months or more trip. Keep it simple.Something like this:

4 months trip south america,
Tankpannier :10 liter
Tooltube :2 liter
Side panniers:40 liter
Luggage roll :30 liter
Total:82 liters

Everyone is different,and takes more luggage or less,but it can be intresting to see.

One month trip to Europe and what I had:

Tankbag :10 liter (camera and daily needs)
Side panniers:40 liters x 2 = 80 liters (kitchen, moto and all)
Pillion passenger bag : 40 liter (tent, sleeping bag, mat, some wear, etc)
Topcase: 40 liters (some wear, maps, documents, etc)

Total: 170 liters

germany to australia trip (about one year)

- 14l tankbag
- 2x 35l Panniers
- 49l Rackpack
- 21l Pelicase

total:154 liter

Biggest yet?
 

Bit of a pootle round Scandanavia or the Alps in Winter on the Brick outfit (plus the obligatory collection of Dutch Gin and a trip to the super market in Calais):

Sidecar nose compartment 45 litres
Sidecar middle compartment 180 litres (full of Dog on UK trips)
Sidecar rear compartment 180 litres
Tool box ahead of battery compartment 9 litres
Canoe sack (tent) on mudguard 20 litres
Canoe sack on battery compartment lid 40 litres
Fake GIVI lookalike top box 40 litres
Tank bag (usually empty and in nose of sidecar) 30 litres

544 litres split 454 "hard", 90 "soft".

Should I also mention the racks with 20 litres of petrol, 2 litres of oil and three litres of water and coolant? I have of course followed the various lighweight travel threads on here and drilled holes in my toothbrush handle. I think this was a mistake though, the batteries seem to be leaking now!

TT boxes 70 litres
Tent bag plus roll sack 20 x 20 litres

A miserly 110 litres of which 18% is full of tent :thumbdown:. Still it uses a tad less petrol!

Six months Vladivostok - Europe

2 x soft panniers 20 litres each (tent, sleeping gear, food, bikecover).
2x soft tank panniers 5 litres each (tools, stove and waterproofs)
1 x soft bag about 30 litres - clothes and paperwork copies (nearly empty in cold climes when I was wearing everything)
Tankbag - about 10 litres - laptop, guidebook and maps, 12v chargers
Tooltube - about 5 litres -spare bearings, seals, wire, oil etc etc.

So about 95 litres in all. Also since I'm typing this from an airport where I've just checked all my luggage in, I now know everything including the bags and my riding gear (minus boots which I had to wear) weighed 32 kilograms. Next time I'd like everything to be 5-7kg lighter but that's going to be a challenge!

60L - (2 x 30L) homemade alu panniers
82L - RJays expandable rack bag
25L - expandable Bagster/Baglux tank bag
18L - 2 x Wolfman tank panniers
5L - length of 4" (110mm) tooltube storage.

A total carrying capacity, therefore, of 190 litres.

Easily enough for two of us (me + pillion) for extended m/c tours lasting 2-3 months at a time.

Also there's quite a bit of stowage space under the seat. Dunno how much exactly, but it's enough for loads of stuff, like:-

1. Audio/communications - intercom unit
2. 12v Electric Tyre Pump

I designed the sidecar for my own needs after two others. There are times when the ability to carry things like a bale of straw strapped on top are a real bonus, as is having a stove that just folds out and lights up. If you need the sidecar to deal with snow and ice, might as well make it a shape that works. For example the width also splits into an exact multiple of jerry cans so if I do ever get to go play in the desert again sticking an extra 60 litres or petrol and 20 litres of water in will work straight off. I think this level of detail comes by use and is nice but not essential.

The TT boxes and roll sack set up I'm happy with. My TT boxes are now 12 years old and could double as a collander due to mounting holes for four different bikes. If these get bashed in to the point of uselessness I'll be going soft and smaller by about 10 litres. The ability to sit on the things is offset by just how big they are. They also encourage "what if" packing and hording.

The next roll sacks I buy will be smaller. If I pack into 10 litres then lash another unused sack to the bike, I encourage myself to stay light for as long as possible but when I do find myself having souvenirs to stow and left over food I can carry it.

GS two-up carrying capacity
 

This is our load for two people for 1 year Sydney to Oslo:

Tankbag: 12L
Tank panniers: 2x 12L
H&B Alu Panniers: 1x35L + 1x42L
H&B Topbox: 35L

Water: 6L (in plastic bottles and hydration packs)
Total capacity = 148L (did I mention this was for 2 ppl bier)

We also had room on top of the panniers and the topbox that we haven't counted. All in all this was really excellent, and we've done many long trips upto 3mths with the same setup since. Generally this is more than enough, but when it isn't we carry 3 extra drybags that we strap to the top of the panniers and topbox, this gives us an expanded 20-50L (Total of 200L) if/when we need it.

The advantage of our setup is that we travel light. This was incredibly important for us being 2up on one motorcycle.
