2-3k, 8 weeks - wehere to go?
OK, so you’re based in the UK, you’ve got experience riding/camping around Europe, you have a 2-3k budget, you’ve saved up 8 weeks paid leave, excellent camping gear and the choice of Harley Sportster or KTM 950 (or you’re prepared to sell them and buy something different).....where do you go for your life changing 2015 trip?
|
Do you know at what period of the year you plan to leave? as it might influence the answers.
Also what kind of rider are you? What constitute a life changing trip for you might be different for other riders. You want to hit the best motorcycle roads or visit different culture, architecture and so on or a mix of everything? |

Ride to Africa all the way to Dogon land in Mali park somewhere and hire a guide for a walk up the mountains....Fantastic...and could be life changing. |
Spend 2K, ship bike to Irkutsk and ride to Bishkek via Mongolia. Save the other 1K and four weeks holiday. It's what we're doing.

Sounds cool. But only 2k. Seems like a bargain to me. How? Sent by Peter from His IThingy. |

In that case. I would get my self up on Google map's. Then use the box tick method of what you are looking for and what your not. Find the place that has the most boxes ticked, how long it will take you to get there, and what route you will use. Half the enjoyment is time spent playing on the maps. Six to eight week's putting up a tent and taking it down every day, can be a pain in the Azz. Try to look for places that you can spend a few day's at. The bike camp in Budapest is a nice middle of Europe kind of place to do a few day's stop over. If you want to go east. To make your way south, Look at northern Italy or south of France. My favoured place is Spain and Portugal. But I don't do camping, used to but the bones are saying enough is enough. Cheap hotel's. Or find someone who want to come along. Dump the camping kit and share hotel's. The cost is not that much more. Any way wish you well. John933 |
Sounds great! Let us know what you decide.

Modman and I are doing it in 2015. We fly to Irkutsk 11 July and drop bikes in Bishkek 31 July having ridden Mongolia, the Russian Altai and Kazakhstan, maybe down to the Pamirs too. Only way we can do it due to Modman's holiday entitlement and my ability to be away from the business. Want to join us? |

Sounds like a great trip. Am I tempted. Yes. Can I. Probably not. Will look your route up on Maps and give it some consideration. Enjoy P Sent by Peter from His IThingy. |
Thank you for the great replies so far, as for camping I prefer it to anything else and have done a 5 week trip before camping every night and never once regretted it.
Like the sound of Mongolia, maybe freight the bike & me there and ride back perhaps? My first thought was a trip to Istanbul and then a meander back but thought I would see what everyone else would do to see if there are any ideas better suited to me :thumbup1: |
I'm in a similar situation to you, although I don't have the time pressures. Going to subscribe to this thread to see the suggestions :)
For me, heading east is very tempting. Maybe up to Georgia.. |
