Baja California

Taking a short trip around Baja California soon, have to rent bikes as coming from Europe. Bikes will be rented from Tijuana and we will be renting for three days . Any recommendations for places to stay ? Last year we rode around the southern tip of Baja . How safe is the north to ride ? there will be three of us on two bikes. Hoping to see the grey whales at laguna ojo de liebre and san ignacio , apart from that nothing planned, open to suggestions. Many thanks

Baja hotels

In San Ignacio, I prefer the La Huerta. Clean and safe. Ride past the Mission and its on the right. At Guerro Negro (not much here. Just a stopping point for travelers) I stay at the Hotel TerraSal. First hotel on the right when you leave Hwy 1 going into town. In Mulege, (nice town for a night) the Hotel Hacienda at the town square (El Centro). Haven't stayed there for 2/3 years but was clean with secure parking in the courtyard. Ride up to the Mission for a great view of the river valley. In Loreto, (worth 1-2 day visit) several good choices depending on your budget. I like Hotel Angra. Its a 10 minute walk to the plaza but very clean, secure parking and a good price. The Hotel Mission is 5 star and pricey but really nice and on the bay. As far as safety, most visitors prefer to get 100 miles south of the border before stopping. And with the exception of the the border cities/towns its all pretty safe. The route that I prefer is taking Hwy 3 to Hwy 5 south along the Gulf and then connecting back to Hwy 1. There is 3 miles of dirt but its well traveled and not a problem for street bikes. Best of luck.

If you are as far south as San Ignacio, I recommend going a little farther to a spot with a view of Volco Las Tres Virgenes. West of Santa Rosalia, there's a sign on the highway, "hotel" with a road going towards the volcanos. The road north is present on maps. Cabins with view of volcano. Best place I stayed, on a recent trip.
Coco's Corner is not to be missed, an iconic Baja stop.
