BBC doc' on 35,000 motorcycle miles in N.Africa & the Middle East - & so much more

For those with access to the BBC iplayer the documentary linked below is a good watch! For those without, it's definitely worth hunting down.

'Documentary which tells the remarkable story of Matt Van Dyke, a timid 26-year-old with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, who left home in Baltimore in 2006 and set off on a self-described 'crash course in manhood'. He bought a motorcycle and a video camera and began a multi-year, 35,000-mile motorcycle trip through northern Africa and the Middle East'.

I lasted 45 minutes. Thought it was utter garbage. But tastes are different: give it a go...

Guy in Indian is a million times better, not because he's famous, but because he seems to be a thoroughly great bloke. Can't say the same about Mr VD.

Our Guy in India - Channel 4

Review: Our Guy In India – review: it’s hard not to like Guy Martin satisfying his passion for motorbikes and tea | Television & radio | The Guardian

I have to say I disagree, Chris. Matt's video is quite unique, whatever one's views are of his motivations and decisions. Granted it's not really a motorcycle video.

As for the Channel 4 offering, yes it's about bikes, but it's just TV; staged, produced the whole way, typical 'oh look how cute the natives are' kind of pap, even if Guy is a nice bloke (with an unbearable accent).

I enjoyed both - different programs for different tastes.

The Storyville documentary wasnt really about bikes (well, apart from the first 15mins) but it was interesting nonetheless. It was interesting how he befriended people and then took on their fight when perhaps most people would just head home - and I wonder if it was part of his condition. Given the recent ISIS events, one can only imagine what would happen if he was picked up by them.

Guy Martin on the other hand is consumable television for a mass audience. Although scripted, I think he is generally just a nice likable bloke who would share a brew and a natter with most people.

You either get lowest common denominator television for as many people as possible (think mainstream) or you get focused tv which will appeal to a certain focus group.

The great thing about the internet is than when the TV is rubbish, there's always YouTube

A good use of an hour and a half of my time.

And my TV licence fee didn't contribute towards paying for it (like Mr vD). With Mr Martin on C4 the adverts pay for it, and I always need a moment to nip out to make a cuppa :thumbup1:

I agree with you Chris.. I didnt even last 45 mins watchin the Matt Van Dyke documentory.

Our Guy in India is great though... :scooter:
