Biker in space?
http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/2...14_800-600.jpg
A guy who rides BMW R1100GS is currently onboard International Space Station. On his duty for the 17-day lasting STS-123 mission as a helm for the space shuttle Endevour which blasted off from Cape Carneval 11.3.2008. Now doing 15 rounds around Earth per day, while it can take years for one circle for us overland bikers :) The view: http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...ugu/219031.jpg Just good to know there's a biker in the space somewhere above us :) Re-entry into atmosphere and landing is scheduled for tomorrow - safe trip home for the crew!!! More pics @ NASA dedicated multimedia page. Cheers, Margus |
Hi Margus,
Thanks for the link have not been on Adv for ages... Started to read it and thought this is a wind up, being so close to 1st April and all, but seems to be real and plus he rides a R1100Gs which makes sense :-) |
I presume he is actually supposed to be there and wasn't just caught trying to strip the shuttle for useable parts!
|
Spacialised 1100GS
Does anybody know of the modifications that he has made to the 1100Gs to survive the re-entry?

So yep Celt, could be easily smart April fools stuff too, that's why I posted it into the Bar section anyways. So let's see about that :) |
Anybody know if this was a wind-up ???
Cant seem to find a trip report on Adv |
Google Earth
I take it with a view like that he won't be needing Google Earth to plot his next bike route.
Hey Grant, the future for a thread........... 'Bike friendly space'? Take me to your dealer..... LOL |
This is where fuel injection is really essential - carburettors don't work well in space, in the zero gravity environment.
They used special tiedown straps to get the bike safely into space, because at launch the bike is vertical. The NASA Products spokesman says the straps will be on sale soon. Super lightweight (8 grams each), shock absorbing and made of carbon fibre webbing, they would be ideal for securing your bike on the ore train from Atar to the Mauritanian coast, for example. Badly secured jeeps have been lost from that train. I think that these straps could be a good franchise business for someone. |
