Carnet

Hi All,

Does anyone know where Brits get Carnets now?

I had one about six years ago but it was issued by ADAT in Germany. I think that was a short fix. Any ideas now please?
I’m a Brit living in the UK on a Brit registered bike.

Thanks

Graham

Talk to Sukie Duhaney at CARS - she is excellent!

I seem to remember CARS wanting some sort of rip-off 'insurance' for the carnet indemnity which was actually not insurance as it would not cover any customs claims... so just extortion. They would not accept a deposit. It's possible I'm getting confused with the RAC so check with yourself.

The ADAC would not issue me (British/German) a CdP for a UK registered vehicle, as they had had too many 'issues' with British applicants.

So to avoid CARS/rip-off Britain, last year I went with TCS. For a non Swiss vehicle the carnet cost is pretty high, but I think it was still cheaper than CARS. Plus they will take a deposit rather than this 'insurance' scam and are a respectable national motoring organisation.

Hi Graham, we used CARS in 2021 for a trip to South Africa. Sukie super helpful, no issues discharging it, don't recall thinking I was being ripped off (cost of airfreight a different matter!).

PS We're following in your footsteps this year riding through South America to the States. Got the impression you has a blast. Are you planning on going back to Africa now?

Perhaps you could clarify the "scam", please.

I have taken out two carnets with CARS (and previously with RAC, as well as elsewhere on the planet). I recall that CARS gave two options - one an insurance policy, the other a deposit. I may be naive, however don't recall any issue.
