Here is an article on the first reported collision between an autonomous car and a motorcycle, it seems the initial report blames the motorcycle because he was filtering even though that is legal in California where the accident happened.
I personally feel road will be a lot safer for all users when the contol of cars is taken out of human hands but there will be incidents like this which I hope the companies developing these vehicles will investigate properly and take steps to see they don't happen again.

Very interesting post. HAV states that "The reason GM shouldn’t do that is simple: lane-splitting is an accepted and fully legal practice in the rest of the world." This isn't quite correct. Here in Germany filtering is tolerated but it is not legalized. I haven't heard about any accident between car and bike drivers while the biker was filtering. So the outcome of such a "skirmish" would be interesting for us :innocent:

The car did what a lot of human drivers do. Aim for a gap, change their mind and run out of capacity to deal with the bike that also moved.

A human has two eyes and a brain designed to chase mammoth at 14mph, we have an excuse. This car surely has side pointing sensors and much faster processing capacity? A serious fail IMHO.

The whole point of these vehicles is that they'll obey the rules and not make mistakes. If they need to fit IFF transceivers to older vehicles its technology that isn't ready yet.

The company I work for is adapting reversing and ACC sensors to avoid getting bicycles in this sort of manoeuvre. Currently they alert the driver (HGV) but its a stepping stone towards telling the AI.

My rule of thumb is that everyone is out to kill me. If they hit me they get two DUI(driving under the influence) convictions taken off their records. Lane splitting may be legal/accepted where you live, but that rider was lucky he didn't get damaged. Always be aware, don't assume just because you have the right of way that others will give it to you.

Here in the UK, we could revert to our original rules for the highway and have a man carrying a red flag to walk in front of each and every motorised vehicle on the public roads, perhaps to include motorcycles?
That will fix the problem: at least that is how the UK politicians decided to cope with the public demand for safety in their brave new world of the 20th century.
That bit of legislation could be updated while it is re-introduced to turn the red flag, which is a little too close to party politics of old, into an LED light, still red of course. Second thoughts, the light has to be flashing orange now, red being allocated to fire brigade vehicles.
