All depends what you call "regular reader" today. There was a time I used to check at least ones a day the “Today’s Posts”. Now, with the explosion of the social medias like the “all in one” FB, use to forget that there still existing the old forum fashion, and the “regular” every day now is every week, more or less, all depends how busy I’m or if I need to search for some specific info…

Was intrigued by this comment, so I searched the fb hu and read all the comments on that particular post. I didn't find Austin's comment in any way as dismissive, but whatever.

While still being a member there, I have "unsubscribed" from the fb hu group. I regularly got annoyed by the utter self perpetuating bollox spouted that the fb algorithm thought that I thought was important. Now I browse there occasionally when the mood takes me. It's seems full of people trying to promote themselves/their sponsors/ flogging dead horses. Very few people keeping it real.

I used to regularly contribute to the hubb .com And read a lot. Now it's every few days, but only if I'm really bored. Nobody comes here anymore and I've found over the last few years, when you're actually travelling and need help/advice, fb hu actually had some useful replies (among the fog), whereas the hubb .com has sweet fa in the way of up to date helpful information.

Often, personal contacts/ actual friends or connections/ networking through other media provide much more useful information.

So, over recent years, the answer to the OP's question is Nay.

It would be good if the forum could be somehow embedded or integrated into the FB page a bit more. Cross referencing or links etc.

There has been a lot of really great info on the FB page. But it's impossible to find in all the the rest of the crap.

Facebook is just not made for data-basing. It emotion triggering click bait heroine. Designed to make immense amounts of money from subliminal mind control :rofl:

I hate everything about Facebook but I use it A LOT. For business and pleasure. It's a necessity these days for a small business like myself. Join em or disappear.

Well everyone to their own on how you perceive these things but amidst a sea of 'check yer tyre pressures mate' and 'I wouldn't go on that bike' disposable contributions Austin's damning with faint praise comment jumped off the page for me.

I agree with the rest of what you said about the characteristics of FB hu vs HU.com. I pop into both from time to time but neither now hold my attention for very long - .com because there's nothing to read and fb because there's nothing worth reading.

Thing is I'm still doing as much bike travel as I used to (CV-19 notwithstanding this year) so you'd think HU would be the go-to source of information but the traffic through here is very low.

That attitude reminds me of the quote from the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy about when doctors have solved all illnesses except extreme forms of death and how “suddenly, everything changed. Previous best selling books such as How I Survived an Hour with a Sprained Finger were swept away in a flood of titles such as How I Scaled the North Face of the Megapurna with a Perfectly Healthy Finger But Everything Else Sprained, Broken or Bitten Off By a Pack of Mad Yaks.”

Whilst it may be devoid of jeopardy or challenge to some to others it is a challenge but I bet there are things the the US rider would do without a second thought that I, and many others, would have grave reservations about undertaking - everyone’s adventure is their own - beit in their own county or on the other side of the world.

I must say that this reference to an Austin post piqued my interest so I had a look-see.

I'm inclined to agree with BackofBeyond. I'll give the benefit of the doubt as to the motives behind it and I suspect the message was rather "It's a fairly straight forward trip that shouldn't give you any headaches, but it will be fun", but you don't get that impression at first or even second glance.

It seems to have been posted simply because Austin fancied a reason to press the "post" button.

And this sort of sums up why I hadn't even thought to look on FB for HU: I never use it.

It can be useful, but used habitually, FB seems to encourage a mentality of writing something for the sake of writing something. Sating the writer's urge rather than the recipient's need.

In my experience something written without thought can very easily be, well, end up thoughtless.

Ditto to Shu's off topic sentiment. I only read it after responding and immediately felt like a naughty boy....

I will agree with Chris' observation about reduced traffic on the HUBB.

When I was a regular visitor, no doubt obfuscating the board with my "insights", I was checking in at least once a day.

If I'm honest, being an expat in a country not known for it's openness, it was my pseudo-social life!! Sad, I know.

But having come back here, the traffic, number of posts, and number of members is greatly reduced from what I remember back then. The existence of a FB page where most of the stuff goes on would explain a lot.

If anyone really is bored enough to be reading here, this is Austin's comment. It is as Warthog interprets it, just in a more flowery way that is likely to flummox a non English native speaker (and the vast majority of the native English speaking world too, judging by some of the poor written English written on all sorts of UK based FB fora)

So, what's the problem with it? Is it coz he iz famus? On that particular thread there is a broad spectrum of contribution. Everything from it'll be easy/ fun to impossible, you won't get out of Martin's drive way before being mugged by covid wielding leprechauns.

The only way the OP will get to Istanbul is by starting the bike engine and engaging first gear.

IMHO, both FB HU and HU.com are over populated with wind merchants. It's just that lots of them are on FB because of it's user-friendliness and no one comes here because early 00's bulletin boards are too much of a faff to interact with. And in the past, possibly over moderated, that people just took their bat and ball home.

Most who know stuff have their own circle/networks and don't go to either. Or they Google their question.

My girlfriend tells me I am a purveyor of quite the most impressive wind, so guilty as charged!

PS. Last time I passed through Tallinn, that time en route from Nordkap to Bulgaria, was summer 2018. It was a straight forward trip, but very enjoyable. Hope you're still well, Nick.

After rolling off the ferry from Helsinki at lunchtime, I paid my respects at JD's shrine (where you took me on my first visit) and then continued my journey towards Dagauvpils (sic.?) in eastern Latvia and a speedway event, so didn't stop in Tallinn for the night.
