I find the stream of consciousness feature of social media (and the likes of the megathreads on Advrider) irritating, and impossible to find out anything useful - the "database" format here works for me, and is surely why the hubb was set up in the first place?

Yes, exactly - it's a permanent repository / source of information, ever changing of course, but it's a base on which to build, and can be easily updated by the people doing the travelling. It's ALL about sharing information to help each other see the world. :mchappy:

My thoughts exactly and nicely put. Some of the threads on ADVRider are so long they're an RTW level expedition in themselves to read them.

I dutifully signed up for the HU FB page and as soon as I was on and saw a topic of interest, I found myself starting to write a post.

As I did so, I stopped and asked myself "Is what you plan to write of any use, a novel idea or just you wanting to air your views?" I found it was actually point #3 and stopped there.

And that lead me to a realisation that what I like on HUBB is that people largely only post if they have a relevant point to make. In other words, fewer responses but way more useful information.

However, I may try an experiment....

My experiment is 24hrs old.

I posted the exact same question on here and on FB.

I got 5 contributors on FB and 3 on here. Speaking subjectively, though, I'd say the information was more useful and less vague on here than on FB. So based on a sample size of 1 (what could go wrong?), HUBB seems to produce smaller response size but of greater value content than FB.

Nice experiment! :) And confirms my own "seat of the pants" view, that FB is great for instant responses and off the top of the head opinions, but the HUBB is where people stop and think a moment before writing, and take the effort to write a complete, well thought out answer, that will continue to help people for years to come.


Notre that we are on FB because that is where lots of people like to go, for all the obvious reasons, and it's important that we connect with people everywhere, doesn't matter how or where, but keeping the travel dream alive, and CONNECTING PEOPLE is what's important.

You might want to consider some sort of feed back into the HUBB. There may be many people out there who use HU FB simply because they don't know of the HUBB but would find it most useful.

For example, top 10 most responded to threads on the HUBB.

Or most liked threads/posts of the day/week.

I'm on another forum that sends out a weekly email of the top threads of the last 7 days. No reason the same can't happen on the FB page. HUBB is by far the more useful and info-centric page of the two.

A bit click-bait-ish but if they like the FB page for the information they can garner, they'll like the HUBB even more: way more focussed, IMHO.

I check in here a few times per week. Mostly I'm searching and reading old threads, but I also read the new stuff that looks interesting.

I rarely participate in any Facebook groups. They're too chaotic, and anything you post is basically gone in 24 hours. There seems to be a culture on Facebook to post whatever happens to pop into your head.

The dedicated websites like this one are fantastic for keeping discussions going and retaining that information for future users to read and learn from.
