India over Xmas and New Year
 

Evening all. My friend and I have decided that as work wasn't ooing to pay us over the Xmas and New Year period we may as well travel India on RE 450s for two weeks.

I can find all the tours online taking you to the normal tourist places and we may do a few of those but is there anyone with local knowledge that could advise of any interesting things to do between 20 Dec and 1st Jan? We fly to Delhi on the 20th. We fancied Ladakh and Kashmir but we are advised it's too cold/icy so it looks like Punjab / Rajasathan areas

Any festivals, events, places of interest that aren't so touristy would be much appreciated

In Rajasthan, the towns of Jaipur and Udaipur are beautiful and have a lovely festive atmosphere during that time. You might find local holidays or processions going on. In Punjab, check out Amritsar's Golden Temple—it's especially magical during Christmas week with decorations and music performances.

Instead of bigger tours, talk to guesthouse owners when you arrive places - they often know of low-key festivals, seasonal foods/markets to check out locally. Safe travels and have a wonderful trip exploring off the beaten path!
