Need some biker's opinions please...
I've been working on my and the Head Girls' website, in anticipation of our trip next year and, as is the case with designers... we get a bit.. carried away sometimes...
Its still under construction - but if you're reeeeaaaallly bored - have exhausted all the righteous, useful and intelligent pursuits for the day... please have a looky and let me know whether its at all usable... dare I hope for entertaining?? Well, whatever... but be gentle. My artistic sensibilities are quite fragile. |
Looks good so far !
However , you must be more careful about the company you keep , I mean fancy including Martynbiker on your site ! You do know that he's just a Spanish smoothie don't you ? http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w...eader/ta22.jpg |
We've heard rumours of the sort!
However - we believe credit given where its due... and with helpful advice like that... we felt it apt to immortalise him on our site... Do you think he's going to charge us royalties or something...? |

I think it could be much worse than that ! http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w.../chimpkiss.jpg |
It's kinda cute.
Personally, I think website design can easily become overly fancy with the site becoming more important than the content. After the first visit or two, I think people will be more interested and entertained by the meat within. We're creatures of instant gratification these days and navigation must be easy. Websites shouldn't pretend themselves to be a game, unless, of course, that's their purpose. Your website is yours, and should be done in a way that pleases you. I'd be more interested about bugs in your food or tent than those crawling across the web page. |
As a user I don't like Flash because it kills your machine although it does usually look very 'pretty'. Here's one guy who got it right - Arse About Face - A motorcycle misadventure around Australia who is a fellow HUBB member and yet another XT rider (we're just so common these days :)).
If you're passing by on your way to SA, give us a call - XT's unite!! Btw, if you're looking for some XT manuals, you'll find a few on our websites. |

Its always hard to find a balance when u r aiming to please two very different audiences: bikers (techy stuff - no nonsence) and non-bikers (fun and general interest - more eye candy)... As a compromise (between pretty and easy) - can u suggest a way that I could make navigation easier? Is it too hard to follow the navigation (pebbles), to the more "meaty" stuff? |
I never realised about dragging the mouse to turn the pages of the book until Martynbiker told me!! Very clever indeed :thumbup1:
Don't like the bugs! |
hello impasto
Hello there, you're index page looks quite attractive an rather interesting. I think it's enough eye candy for anyone. Prehaps now you could consentrate on filling it in around the artwork. Nothing like some straight forward buttons for different reasons. Ex. profile, bikes, personal info, favorite charity, photos, videos. Keep your artwork for personal info like the book. I'd keep it to the strict minimum, you could always bulk it up with artwork later, after your trip. Just a thought, hope you are happy with your new/second hand bikes. Good luck, have a ball.

you really are fond of your Chimp pics Roger! are you trying to tell us something? |
If you are seeking to provide entertainment. As always there are lots of conflicting requirements. Blind people have a real problem with frames on websites. It fools their screen reader programs. It is very helpfull to have text descriptions of pictures. ( there is a special term for this, but I forget it).
Remember too, some of us by necessity are stiill on dialup. so nice viewable thumbnails that link to bigger pictures is very usefull. |
KISS....
...with good content. |

I can only conclude that the lass has poor eyesight . I don't know where these chimp pics keep coming from , well actually I do : http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w...himptongue.jpg Some of his best work is on the internet . I just go to Google Images , type "Martynbiker" and voila - another chimp pic ! Sorry old chap , maybe if you cut your hair and shaved more often it would help . |
Stunning design work
Fab design there, really loving the site. Flash is always fun ;-)
It feels very 'tactile' and draws me in to find everything on the page without being terribly cryptic about that content - any easter eggs? Just a couple of points and please do feel free to ignore.... you see I can do the techy stuff, but I'm not exactly fantastic when it comes to the design! In fact I'm pretty dire.... anyway.... now let me get to the content basically... the site is wonderful but now I want to add your content to my RSS reader because I can pull it down very easily from pretty much any internet connected device and when I'm on the road I'm only paying to download the words rather than the pretty flash. Ummm... that's it! :thumbup1: m |
I'm humbled...
Thanks Matt - always good to be complimented by a 'techy' - since I shamelessly pirate & hack all my script and hope my good design dazzle the techy's into thinking I know what I'm doing!

As far as ee's are concerned - Where' planning a special surprise for clever boys... in due course! LOL! |
Hi, I think the site is very pretty and i lave the look of it. AND I wish i could do things like that but i cant and cant be bothered to learn java or html..
However I do have two negative thing (but hopefully helpful): I am running it on a laptop (screen size 14 inch) and the display text size was very small almost impossible to read (I would guess 6 point), and the interface only took up about 1/2 my screen (I run firefox btw, if that makes a difference). So it made it hard to read, I dont know how you can /or if you want to but make the text adaptable to different screen sizes. 2 I played around for a while and could not find a few of the links (the page did not turn for me) so i gave up. I would maybe make a navigation box that makes things easier to surf around. I was told that in todays net world if a punter need more then 2 seconds to find what they are looking for they will give up, and i guess this is kinda true for me.. Other then that keep up the good work.. Also good choice on the XT .. I have one myself.. although it dont look like it any more..http://www.xrv.org.uk/photopost/data...m/AlexBike.JPG |
Like the look alot. It has a real adventure feel to it. It did take me a bit of time to figure out how to turn the pages(too small) of the book. Perhaps just a click would be better, although I did enjoy opening the pages by drag.
The bag drop could have fortune cookie sayings as a suggestion. Great job just perhaps a little simpler. |

The IP thing is still a problem for me to see the site in work, but at home it's working fine.... how are you pointing the DNS to the IP? It may be worth hanging the IP off a Nameserver first, which may avoid the problems. m |

Okay now it is so big that i cant see more then a 1/3 of the screen.. is this my computers fault? I remembered last night what it reminds me of and that is Micheal palin's Sahara opening.. |
