Spot Tracker in Patagonia
Hi guys, a group of five of us Aussies are travelling together through Patagonia in Jan/Feb '15 and we were wondering whether it is worth at least one of us taking a Spot Tracker along in case of emergency or do you think we have safety in numbers since there are 5 of us. What would coverage and emergency response be like in that region anyway? Any response or past experience from fellow HU members would be much appreciated .

You can see SPOT satellite coverage from here.

Probably wouldn't hurt to have a spot along. There are some very lonely and remote stretches along ruta 40. They were busy paving much of it 3 years ago.
Emergency response I imagine would be rather slow. Best to have whatever you need with ya to fix whatever. I threw a chain in the middle of a very lonely stretch, I was glad to have the tool and spare links to fix it. |
IMHO rather than the spot you would be better off ( if you need to use in anger) with this
An emergency can take many shapes- The ability to communicate the nature/type of emergency to the rescue services hugely increases your chances of focussed support. |
