Thailand/laos/cambodia... Burma?
 

Hey guys and gals.

So this is my first post in here. Hoorah!

I am in Brisbane Aus and currently ride a Tiger XC.
In 2013 I was lucky enough to head to Thailand for the first time for a wedding. I ditched the wedding after 4 days and then my younger bro and I flew to Chiang Mai when we hired 2 x Honda CB500X and rode northern Thailand for 9 days. I spent a night on the Laos border and a night on the Burma border.

I realised 9 days was not enough and promised I would be back in Nov 2015 for a month to explore more and discover some new countries!

Well last night I booked my tickets and this is happening!

I would love to hear from anyone who may have been through Thai/Laos/Burma or Cambodia recently. I am reaching out to the Chiang Mai Community as well.

What I am looking at & info I have so far:
- Hiring a bike (CRF250) vs buying 2nd hand (Honda GROM or like)?
- Border crossing differ depending if you own the bike or renting?
- Laos can get into.
- Cambodia can get in but are known to not let Thai vehicles in.
- Burma & Vietnam no go on the border crossing.
- Hire bike means you fill in paperwork for to be POA in other country?
- Rego takes about 4 days in Thai for 2nd hand purchase?
- Selling bike after done?
- Sourcing a good second hand bike and maybe having it ready to go on arrival?

These are just some of the random bits of info I have received and questions I am asking.

I still have time to go down either avenue, but if anyone has come across any of the above points, please drop me a line.

I'm only on PAge 3, but first question would be how did you find the CRF? That is what I have been recommended for over there (rear rack depending)

For South East Asia i would hire a 125ccm bike for 5 dollars per day. Those vehicles are very comon and available everywere. Buying and selling takes time and only comes cheaper, if you spend a lot of time there (more then you get a visa for). Also it is very hard to cross boarders with your own bike wich is registered in a neighbar country. Better take the bus to cross boarders and to get around after returning the bike to the renting place:

Too much messing about for my liking, hiring in 2/3/4 countries, found it easier just going with a company who allowed you to cross border

I'm also from Brissy although I haven't lived there in a long time. I have just returned from 2 weeks around northern Laos on a CRF250 and I have also managed 3 weeks around Cambodia in 2010 on an XR250 and the Northwest loop in Vietnam on an XR250 in 2009


In Laos we rented through Remote Asia Travels who were great to deal with, the bikes were near new, we had absolutely no bike problems at all and James spent time with us at pick up to critique our rough itinerary and make some very helpful suggestions. If only it was always this easy.


Cambodia was an excellent trip although there was a stuff up with the bikes we had organized so we were able to pick up a couple on the spot at a rental shop in Phnom Penh.


Vietnam was a much harder trip and the bike was a wreck and at the time much harder to source.


I have been paying about $40 USD a day for the bikes give or take and just carrying 1 bag of stuff strapped to the seat. The accommodation varies country to country but I have always managed to get something.


I've never bothered with the border crossings so can't help you there but if you have any particular questions about travel within the countries themselves feel free to drop me a line.
