Theft insurance in South america
I was wondering if anyone here could help as google hasn't been much help after a lot of days of searching. I'm from canada and I plan on riding my ducati desertx to argentina in a month or so. I know you can get liability insurance at most borders but what about theft? I can't find any companies that provide theft insurance. I found one for mexico but no luck other than that. I see a lot of people riding expensive bikes on this kind of trip and was just wondering are they riding without theft coverage?

No international anti theft insurance in South America
Hey! Excellent question. As far as I know you can get a SOAP (Seguro Accidentes Personales) in any country. This insurance covers the hospitalization cost of any person that you would have an accident with. In many countries there is an RCI (Responcibilidad Civil) which covers general third party damage. Unfortunately I am not aware of an international anti theft insurance. You basically have to take good care of your bike. DonĀ“t park on the streets, put a brake disc lock on it, etc. ... Thrilled to see how your trip goes! Have fun!

If anyone is looking for a Mercosur insurance for a motorcycle with foreign plates I can totally recommend the service of the travel legends Klaus Schubert and Claudia Metz. They are based in Argentina and very friendly an competent.

theft insurance
I dont know what the stats of High end bikes being stolen in southern SA but I can assure you its not going to happen in Colombia ,Ecuador ,Peru or Bolivia
locals that own high end bikes are connected in these countries and a thief would not be having breakfast, lunch or supper ever again the next day or ever if caught I have never heard of a big bike being stollen in the 7 years I have been in Colombia you stick out like a sore thumb in the counties I have mentioned I ride with Judges , Lawyers , Mayors, Police Chiefs , Battalion Commander's all sorts of people and they Admire foreign plated Adventure riders But you should take precautions always Getting theft insurance for overlanders in SA is probably not sold . I have not even heard of it and my moto is Colombian plated F700gs |
See this recent discussion here on the HUBB:
Global Loss Damage Theft Insurance for Australian Registered Bike. It addresses a similar topic. The general consensus in that discussion, which matches my experience over the past 20 years, is that it is easy (in fact, obligatory) to get 3rd party liability just about anywhere, possible (but usually quite expensive) to get collision and/or personal injury insurance in some countries, but pretty much unheard of to be able to get theft insurance to cover you in countries that your vehicle is not registered in.
