Vietnam or Laos to China on a private Australian bike
 

Hi everyone, I am planning a solo bike ride from Melbourne to London in 2020 and I would like some info on taking my Australian registered bike into China from either Vietnam or Laos and leaving China to Kyrgyzstan. If anyone has current info I would like to hear from you. Cheers Jiff

Lots of red tape to get through China with a foreign bike, and expensive too. But its possible. You better hook up with a group or create a group yourself to share the costs of permits and guides - which are very mandatory!

Vietnam kinda similar, guides and permits needed - although occasionally a foreign bike traveller «slips through» the border into Vietnam. The legal aspect of the latter are quite questionable though imo.

I think all groups through China goes via Laos.

PS Dont miss Indonesia - it was THE highlight of my RTW trip.

Used motorcycles are pretty inexpensive in Vietnam. I think you can take them over the border into Laos and Cambodia, but not Thailand.
