Wabash Blues for the HU, music for the Bar

Most bars have music. This version of Wabash Blues was recorded by my Grandpa as a banjo/guitar duet with Velma Truett on .... October 7, 1927 78rpm record.

Let me know if you like it or not. I will post Grandpa's original "Ghost Dance" if you want. Grandpa Harry George invented the TRUJO Banjo, and had to sell to the Gibson Guitar company in the late 1920s because of the Great Depression.

Now, during the Great Recession, 80 years later, hopefully, Grandpa's music will be welcome at the HU Bar. Next round is on me.

Player is on web page,

Are you high?:eek3:

McCrankpin 4 Jun 2009 10:55

Yes, I like that a lot. Definitely HU Bar music.

Without wishing to hijack your thread I'll offer this: An old English folk song, that even now is argued about. Southerners (like me) claim it's an old Sussex farming song. West Country folk claim it's a Somerset ploughing song.
So it's more for rough camping than the HU Bar.
This version was recorded in London in May 1928 and broadcast later that evening on the BBC. The performer was a gardener from Sussex:

Albert Richardson - The Old Sow (played with a new needle) :blushing:

Then it crossed the Atlantic and Rudy Vallee re-did it for a N. American audience:
YouTube - THE OLD SOW SONG Cyril Smith Rudy Vallee :rolleyes2:

Anyone got a resolution to the Sussex-Somerset argument?

Music, the language of the soul

Flyingdoctor, I will let Grandpa himself respond (via National Four-string Banjo Hall of Fame) to your comment regarding his 78 rpm Colombia Record "Wabash Blues" Please See comments at the end of National Four-String Banjo Hall of Fame write up, thanks

The following excerpt from the National Four-string Banjo Hall of Fame

Go here: The National Four-String Banjo Hall of Fame Museum

"Trujo (made by Gibson) Style A Plectrum Banjo - 1930

Because of its appearance, the Trujo banjo is often unfairly malaigned by banjo players and collectors. Made by Gibson to the specifications of the west coast banjo duo of Harry George and Velma Truitt, the Trujo banjo - with its deep body - was designed specifically to accentuate the bass frequencies of the banjo thereby making the instrument more musically pleasant when used in recordings and radio broadcasts. Also, as Harry George was an early proponent of tuning a four-string banjo like the top four strings of the guitar (known as "guitar" or 'Chicago style" tuning), the depth of the body and unique tonering incorporated into the Trujo banjo were ideal for that particular tuning. Unfortunately, these very positive elements of musicality and design are all too often overlooked when one gazes upon the lion's head (often mistaken for a gargoyle) carved into the peghead which is playfully sticking his tounge out at you! From the Jack Canine Collection"

And I would like to add,

Grandpa was an early radio performer and designed the TRUJO banjo to better carry music over the 1920s radio station microphones. TRUJOs caught on and his original. "Ghost Dance" became a standard and is mentioned in most anthologies of banjo music.

For photos of a TRUJO Banjo, with its' famous lion's peg head go to the Nation Four-String Banjo Hall of Fame referenced above.... Banjo collectors sell and trade TRUJOs for big, big bucks.... tens of thousands of dollars.... several have sold for more than the retail cost of 5 fully equipped BMW GS.

McCrankpin,

Now, your May 28, 1928 BBC broadcast of the english Folk Song was precious. Quite appropriate for the HU PUB.

Thanks, I am forwarding both renditions to a colleague of mine who is a musical anthropologist, specializing in folk songs, to see if he can provide some cultural context and perhaps some philosophical interpretive meaning. Thanks.

And, no you are not hijacking my thread, that would be impossible, for we are both going in the same general direction.

I would invite both of you to visit my other HU Bar thread

I'm afraid Motorhead doesn't do it for me, but never mind.

Now, Tango Wind, well, that's different altogether! More of what I like. Thanks for that.
I spent a brilliant winter in the south of Spain about 3 or 4 years ago learning tango. Wonderful!

I've plenty of tango CDs in my collection. One example on the fringe: "Di Meola Plays Piazzolla". But also Cafe de los Maestros and Revancha del Tango.

Just to add something different again, I've always liked African music, probably started when I went to Ronnie Scotts years and years ago, bought a ticket from a tout and got in to see Abdullah Ibrahim. First time I ever heard a piano talk and sing!
And my looming Africa trip has intensified that interest. Which led me to find this wonderful item:

African music first came to my attention years ago... as the many returned Peace Corps volunteers who had served in Africa, visited my ranch in Arizona. One of the first, a man who had served in Sierra Leone, brought back Bob Marley aand explained Marley's *"One Love" was for all practical purposes the national anthem of Sierra Leone.

* YouTube - Bob Marley - One Love

Or ,this rendition might be a more appropriate model. This is HD video or beyond... YouTube - Playing For Change: Song Around the World "One Love"

and one of my favorites... YouTube - Bob Marley - Stir it up

Another, who had served in **Cameroon presented me with tapes of village music, and then there was the young woman who had served in Ghanna, and the couple who met and married in Botswana, and soon I was encouraging each volunteer to leave me samples of music from the counties where they served. I have quite a collection of African music, back at the ranch.

** YouTube - Cameroon Music and Images

We had African music almost every night in my recreation building with it's now famous "Spy Bar." Thanks, your music has brought back memories of the best years of my life, thus far.

While in Morocco, Elisa and I spent several nights at the Peace Corps hotel in Marrakech, we slept on hammocks on the roof top, chatted with some very interesting folks and really enjoyed ourselves. As I recall the hotel was named Sidi Sur or something like that.

Hey, might be a great idea if those posting ride tales could send a link for local music too.

It's the journey, not the destination

Some mornings I wake up and know I'm on the right road. This was one of those mornings. My first words this morning were the lyrics to Nat King Cole's "Route 66." My thoughts were of the road, the Mother Road of North America.

Many past mornings I awakened very near the road itself. My ranch is on a hill, my dirt gravel lane empties into Route 66 as it winds from Winona, through the ponderosa pine forest, toward Flagstaff. The high snow covered peaks, called sacred mountains by the Navajo and Hopi, dominate the road, and reveal the road as it is, insignificant layers of asphalt.

Nat King Cole's 1950s recordings of "Mona Lisa" and "Unforgettable" were my lullabies.

He also composed and recorded the now infamous song "Route 66" that has help to crystalize an idea, a concept for our own music video.

When I see Glen Heggstad's photographs, (StrikingViking in Ride Tales), and reflect upon how different they are from the post election media images of Iran, I understand the importance of those differences.

No one has written a ballad about the Pan American Highway, we can do this
and more much more. We can share our experiences through a music video.

Ideas welcome. xfiltrate....

I'm afraid it was all Kerouac! It was an homage to the great man, just some of my favourite quotes from 'On the Road,' and 'Dharma Bums.'

My writing nowadays is very similar in style, just nowhere near as stunning in content. I've got some fairly recent pieces on Spain that you might be interested in, if you would like me to send them. I'm jealous that you are in Galicia! I love the province, many many fond memories there, even if they do speak a crazy fish language. I want to move back and live there permanently one day.

I too, am of the opinion that there is a world economic crisis, and am convinced that capitalism is dying, if not dead, yet we cling to it like an old dog that you really should put down, but cling to for selfish reasons. Every 'fix' is from short sided people inside the system, you don't get a siamese twin to perform the operation to separate it from itself.

And here I'd like to offer the best 3 1/2 minutes ever broadcast on any TV network - in the UK anyway.

My qualification to say this is that I was a distribution network engineer for many years on BBC and ITV networks, (and the chief installation engineer for when Channel 4 was introduced) - and I don't care if that's irrelevant or not - this programme made the cables rattle!
This South Bank Show has got to be the best thing those networks ever broadcast and I've never understood why the programme's owner has never brought it out on DVD.

Collective Consciousness Society

Don't know any Turkish. But I look forward to one day returning to Istanbul to meet up with Istanbul Bisiklet Motosiklet! I've read so much good stuff about them here on the HUBB.

Anyway, needed cheering up this morning, and this thread could do with a bump. So I started with this: 81 Years young at the time.

In 1993 he did a similar show at the Barbican in London. Aged 85, still a magnificent entertainer. What a show!!!!!
Wonderful memories.......

Then there's this piece from Eddie and the Hot Rods, introducing some pre-65 motoX

Regular meetings in S.E England.

Moving over to Classical stuff, a bit more - or a lot more, cheering up with this:

Finally, I noticed there was a complete lack of Collective Consciousness on this thread, so here's the Society:

Time for tea - it's just brewed..... beer

A lot of priceless stuff here I think - caters for everyone of a certain age.

Time to keep this thread going I think.

Xfiltrate gave us some family connections when he started it.
So, in pensive mood, here's something that persuades me to offer a family anecdote.

Magnificent!!

I often put some cash into buskers' hats, specially when they're playing accordion.
Outside of Malaga Cathedral, on the steps of Dracula's Castle, and Edinburgh city centre, are ones that I remember at the moment. Plus more recently, outside the Edenbridge Co-op supermarket a short ride from here.

Back in 1946 my Mum would meet up with friends from her WAAF days, in the Lyons Corner House in The Strand.
Occasionally, a fellow about her age would be on the pavement nearby playing an accordion, sitting on a little stool. My Mum recognised the badge he wore as 'The King's Badge'. It meant he had been injured in the war and was disabled in some way.
She struck up a conversation and learned he had been seriously injured in Italy, could not stand for any period of time and had no qualifications or trade. So he couldn't find work.
Well, my Mum was working at the time in a S.E. London Vickers factory. It used drawing materials from a small factory not far from The Strand, a short walk from where this ex-serviceman lived. And she had an idea that they'd have machine-minder work suitable for him.

And they did.
So he started work there.

And....

http://i1263.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5c103668.jpg
Down the Strand, 1947.

A wedding followed and a while later, I was born. :eek3:

With a family started, my Dad continued his determination to overcome his injuries with intensive exercise. Which enabled him to pass his motorcycle test on a BSA Bantam, gain strength enough to step up to a BSA M20 sidecar outfit and thence a Panther outfit, which he rode as the family transport for around 15 years. Playing an accordion had probably been good exercise for handling a Panther outfit, which carried family on board and pulled trailer behind.

So, I always drop some cash into the hats of street accordionists and tell them this little story.

Introducing the next video, my Dad's favourite tune was this...

Dad's accordion was a little Hohner 24-bass, just light enough for him to carry on the bus to The Strand.
He'd play this occasionally at home, and eventually, out of sight one day, I struggled into the harness to have a go. Not successful as I got it on upsidedown.

He'd dabble with tango when the mood was right. So here's something that, although a new-ish video, I think he will probaby have already seen many times, from that Nice Place Up In The Sky.

Ending with another way of saying 'life is good'...

xfiltrate 9 Jan 2013 01:42

"Life is Good"

McCrankpin, a sincere thank you for sharing a little of your family history
and a lot of great music. And, thanks for crediting me for the thread. But, I must say your contributions far outweigh mine.

Sorry for the long absence we had to travel from Spain to Argentina and then immediately rode out for Chile....

We just rode back into B A after riding to Valparaiso , Chile and back crossing the Andes is always fun.... we both crashed on slippery mud Elisa and her bike ended up half submerged in a ditch and I face flat and wondering where Elisa and her bike were... bikes: 1 destroyed wind screen and 1 bent shift lever... "cubremanos" did well protecting clutch and brake levers...and gear took most of both impacts....

We are O K now in Buenos Aires a couple weeks earlier than expected, but R & R for sprained shoulder and elbow. BMW helmets and touring jackets saved us for sure.... we had been on the road for about 6 eeks camping out 75% staying with university types in Chile and a good hotel once and a while.... we did undeveloped parks like Sierras de las Quejadas unofficial camping only and Pre Delta National Park with an abundance of wildlife

Anyway I am right now...medicating with Malbec and will find a musical response as soon as I am inspired, which should not be too long for I am in Buenos Aires, Mi Ciudad.... we met a London to Cape Town on an XR 250 and his interesting family - the young daughter was the first woman to wind surf across the English Channel I think Richard Branson did it but with a staff of 85 Anyway the woman is Britain jr wind surf champ her dad was delighted that I offered him my NX400 for a couple hours during which he regained his youth and gave his 2 daughters and his wife a good thrashing over some pretty rough country....

PS Elisa wrote some very compelling poetry this trip which was primarily to lend support to a close friend whose Mother died. I hope Elisa will post some of her poetry - on the HUBB

Thanks for the Shakira video xfiltrate. That's a concert-and-a-half! Definitely some Ethiopian Eskista influence in some of her dance sets....

I'd like now to post a couple of videos from a new local band here, 'Willow'. I like their music and their style.

The female member of the trio is Fi, who is also an artist, meditation guider and teacher.
For quite a few years she has conducted classes free-of-charge in art and meditation at The Fountain Centre in Guildford. A place where I've received tremendous help and support during my last two years of adventure and direction-finding.

So, after helping this overland biker along his path since his last overland bike ride, here's Fi and her fellow musicians with two of their own compositions.

Indeed

Maybe now's the time to bring in Nicolas Sorin.

Years ago in Guatemala I saw a poster for the film "Bombon el Perro".
There was something fascinating about that film. Quite apart from the beautifully simple story, wonderful scenery and enchanting music.
When I returned back home, it was showing in London.
And on sale on DVD.

It just needed "Historias Minimas" to appear in the Amazon UK stocklist, followed by "El Camino de San Diego" and I was (maybe) the UK's No.1 fan of Nicolas and Carlos Sorin.
I've lost track of how many times I've watched "El Perro", more than "Historias" but fewer than "World's Fastest Indian."
I also learned why the acting in "El Perro" and "Historias" (and other Sorin films) is so fascinating.
Won't say here - it might be considered a 'spoiler'.

So, some Nicolas Sorin pieces (son of Carlos, the director), with magnificent on-the-road Argentinian scenery.

Well, the film is about a dog, so here's what dogs do:D

El Camino de San Diego

Historias Minimas

A departure here, the main theme is 'Cancao de Alcipe' by Carlos Paredes. (CD: O Melhor de Carlos Paredes Guitarra)

Nicolas Sorin at work recording for the film "La Ventana"

Right, I need to go and watch one of those DVDs.....

But first, the Tango Wind video is well-worth posting again.
For me, the London scene is quite something - Chelsea Bridge. For the first year of life I lived nearby, in the house of my Dad's parents.
They lived halfway between the bridge and Victoria Station from where my Dad would get the bus to The Strand with his accordion, long before I was born.
The bridge became one of my playgrounds in childhood when visiting my Grandparents, still living in the same house near the bridge.
I'd climb up the sloping suspension cables as far as my parents would allow, or further if they weren't looking.

In the 90s it was like this (not my video, but I'd go to spectate from time to time).

Then, the tea stall went to a musem somewhere, smart appartments were built close by and Friday nights were never the same again.

So thanks for the video.

Now, El Perro!
.

The Answer

The year was 1966 and in the fall I was off to Costa Rica as a Peace Corps volunteer. The other bridge in Tango Wind is Puente de la Mujer in Puerto Madero Ciudad de Buenos Aires.

Somehow I knew you would relate to Tango Wind and yes it was filmed partially filmed in your hometown nice to know it strikes close to home

I need some time to absorb Sorin La Ventana and all of your last are very very good and spot on - and parts of each has touched me ver very deeply - like the eye chart - as I was blind for several years....

Oops - More photos than music on that previous post - But a lot of beer had flowed by the time of lantern launch, and more afterwards before dabbling on the HUBB.

But Bravo again for the Haroula Alexiou tango bier, and I hope a couple of sky-bound videos will be OK to introduce a couple more artists.

A walk over to Kenley the morning after revealed no Chinese lanterns had landed on the airfield.

No, only this taking off.

(Somehow, a passing passenger jet neatly synchronised its throttle with this take-off - we're between Heathrow, Biggin Hill and Gatwick here).

.
And this landing.

McCrankpin 5 Oct 2013 21:19

What a great thread this is - thanks and long may it continue!

I'll offer a something in a slightly different direction.

A small introduction first. There have been big changes here over quite a few years, that have variously led to today's posting.
After over 30 years of messing about on an old piano, all self-taught (except for learning to read music at school) and strictly for my own entertaintainment, earlier this year I took the plunge and acquired a nice modern digital piano. And more importantly, started for the first time ever, taking lessons.

It's possible that, in addition to events over the past few years that led to this new episode, this thread might also have played a part......

So, first up is a musician who composed a novelty piece called 'Champagne'. I have one page of it, printed as an advert in a 1932 album of popular sheet music, that I found years ago in a local junk shop. It's far too difficult for me and I can find no recording of it. But my new lessons prompted me to do some research.
I found this Youtube, the same composer, with 'Wet Yo Thumb'.

Which I do a lot when thumbing through albums of old sheet music, looking for the simple arrangements.

Anyway, that led to another Youtube of a young pianist that I'd never heard of before, playing Zez Confrey's 'Dizzy Fingers'.

And it's always the way with these things, one find leads to another as long as you don't abandon the journey. I found that Stephanie Trick was playing four shows at the Isle of Islay Jazz festival, just a few weeks ago. So there I dashed. And this is my little bit of filming.

'Death Ray Boogie' by Pete Johnson

'Honky Tonk Train Boogie', an improvisation on a blues composition by Meade Lux Lewis.

There are eight distilleries on this small island.
My, how the music, and the single malt, flowed!

I've been thinking - music performance in posh concert halls, recording studios, TV studios, massive stages, big pubs, maybe doesn't really follow the ethos of 'adventure motorcycling'.
It should be out on the street, with the people, coming and going.
And now there are dozens of street pianos all over the place for that very purpose......

and this guy's wearing gloves! I'm going to try that when I've posted this lot up.....

Outside Herne Hill station, south London, near where I'm from

And the same, I think, Rachmaninov Prelude, here in St Pancras station

There are at least two pianos in St Pancras, new ones replacing the old ones last year.
Another:

(A bit of motorcycling at 4:56)

Whenever I pass through they're all occupied, so I took this photo a few weeks ago:

The children were really bouncing around to their mum's playing.

Another, at Liverpool Street. No age limits....

And finally, Polish artist Eduard Pazhik and daughter Marianna, indoors to start

Blues with Words

The other night, soon after I received "The Swordsman" a painting by my grandfather, I shook as I starred at it and it said to me if you want Blues, read Kerouac - who lived with his mother next door to my Grandmother in St. Petersburg, Florida just before he died. I actually met him at the "Wildboar" pub in Tampa where he sat crossed legged on the bar - drinking Old Crow and beat the beat of his own drum.

I re read "on the Road" and because it is appropriate here share a few of Kerouac's quotes on this Jack Kerouac and Jack Daniels night at Rancho Los Rosales in Flagstaff, Arizona.

“because he had no place he could stay in without getting tired of it and because there was nowhere to go but everywhere, keep rolling under the stars...”
― Jack Kerouac, On the Road

“Better to sleep in an uncomfortable bed free, than sleep in a comfortable bed unfree.”
― Jack Kerouac, On the Road

“As we crossed the Colorado-Utah border I saw God in the sky in the form of huge gold sunburning clouds above the desert that seemed to point a finger at me and say, "Pass here and go on, you're on the road to heaven.”
― Jack Kerouac, On the Road

Kerouac died September 6th 1969 defending a disabled Air Force veteran in a bar after the manager beat the sh.. out of him. The real culprit was alcohol.

Manu Chao

Manu Chao.... old school/new school ... great beat and lyrics...
- roll out your low rider and crank up the tape player...

https://youtu.be/pxdIOmNuNTk

Wikipedia excerpts
"Manu Chao (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈmanu ˈtʃao]; born José-Manuel Thomas Arthur Chao, June 21, 1961) is a French-born musician of Spanish origin. He sings in French, Spanish, English, Italian, Arabic, Catalan, Galician, Portuguese and occasionally in other languages."
Mentioned in The Journal of Natural and Social Philosophy[edit]
In an article published in 2010, Cornelia Gräbner mentioned Chao's lyrics in a discussion about how the work of four different authors who contribute to the alter-globalization movement. Gräbner discusses how Manu Chao, Eduardo Galeano, Subcomandante Marcos, and José Saramago present alternative practice of politics from different perspectives. Gräbner states that Chao's work emphasizes the connection of contemporary ‘rebellious Europe’ with past struggles, particularly through his lyrics and combinations of musical styles. Gräbner believes that Chao's family history plays a crucial role in his political views and how that has shaped the way he creates his music. She explains that "Chao translates his family’s anti-fascist political tradition into a politicized embrace of cultural difference and into a clear anti-racist and anticapitalist stance." She also states that in the 1900s Mano Negra took an anticapitalist and anti-racist stance, and that Chao continue to use these messages in his music even after the dissolution of Mano Negra.[15]"
