yep, couchsurfing is an awesome way of travelling, not just for accommodation but if you have nothing to do, then check out the weekly meets they do in most big cities.
i've used it a lot, just yesterday i stumbled into the Köln meet, good times.

just make sure you plan ahead, but not too far ahead... like, a week ahead is best for most.

there are creepy weirdos that try to use it as a way to get girls into their house. try to avoid those.
