Which bike? What kind of people?
 

Everybody agrees that the choice of the bike is very important.

In my opinion the paramount question is with who we are going to travel.
It is important especially when travelling in desert conditions when one can not detach form the group.

If your bike is slightly unsuitbale for the work but you have the wright companions with good attitude many obstacles can be overcome.

On opposite, when you have perfect bikes for the job but one member of the crew dispays an inappropriate behaviour the atmosphere of the whole trip might be spoiled. The small problems become bigger and bigger.

Group? I almost always ride solo. I've tried group touring a couple of times and did not care for it.

Ok. I was not clear enough.
This problem emerges especially when going off road in desert conditions. Everywhere else you can be happy traveling alone.

FYI, many cross Deserts solo. I have traveled quite a bit through Mojave, Nevada and a lot of Baja ... SOLO.

A really good bike and careful planning are important if doing this ... but your group dynamics comments are relevant for sure! Working well as a team is critical to everyone making it through ... and happy! :D

Generally solo for me. Loads of sand/desert.

Agreed here. I have done big group rides and small groups of 2-3 total. I always prefer to ride solo or with just one or two friends that I trust.

With bigger groups the dynamic changes as there are so many personalities and riding styles...sometimes dangerous. So, I end up riding solo for the most part.

I heard that you will not know what the desert is unless you go there alone.
For me the longest desert stretch solo was from Taouz to Tagounite (without any means of communication) so I got the "feeling".

But lets go a step further. Has anyone ridden solo across a big erg like Grand Erg Oriental in Tunisia? I mean f.example from Douz to Lac Erreched. Assuming one will arrange a fuelling point near Lac Erreched it would be circa 150km of pure dune ridding.

P.s.The problem with deep desert multi day solo motorbike expeditions is that you can never take enought water and fuel and if you do the bike will be unrideable/overloaded and prone to break.
