4v4 rental hints
 

Hey buddies,

generally I'm more of a motorcycle guy. But sometimes also need to make vacation with my lady who is not into motorcycling but adventures ;-) - and therefore a 4v4 offroad trip (around 3 weeks) would be cool. Where? No idea yet (not Europe)...
Does someone has some nice recommendations for this? (with proper rental prices, more on budget, nothing insane)

Are you looking for a multi-day, wildcamping, TET type trip?

For a taste of offroad while maintaining a civilized level of comfort for your partner, one good recommendation would be Cyprus. Fly into Paphos, rent a UTV/buggy and do a day tour of Akamas National Park. Affordable and comfy.

Yes, should be a longer roundtrip somewhere for around 2-3 weeks. Camping/Hotel stays mixed, much offroad but for beginner/intermediate level.
Cyprus sounds nice, but is probably for that duration too small ???? I will keep it in mind for shorter coming adventures though, so thanks ????

For 3 weeks, with civilization not too far away? Morocco appears to be the favourite option and lots of posters here have done it in 4x4s (and my understanding is that rentals are reasonably easy to find)

The usual suspects: Iceland, Georgia/Armenia, Kyrgyzstan or Tajikistan, Bolivia or Peru, South Africa/Namibia/Botswana, maybe Oman…I could go on, but this would be more rewarding if there were indications you’d worked on some possibilities yourselves. To some extent all depends on your preferences for weather, terrain, viewing wildlife, loca languages and cultures, 4 wheeling difficulty, etc. And I’m not even getting into the questions about what you’d consider “proper” rental prices, much less “nothing insane.”

@markharf: I get your point and don't worry, I will do my researches further on. The point is just, that I'm open to most destinations around the world for it - but I also know that it's not everywhere easily possible to rent a vehicle and cruise around. (For example I searched motorcycle rentals in northern Africa, Oman... but besides Morocco couldn't find any proper option) Therefore I just asked generally and maybe there are countries which are well known destinations for proper 4v4 rentals... and then I would go further with my investigations and plannings :)

About pricing, well, I guess we all have a reasonable understanding about it - at least the average workers. So countries like iceland or other scandinavian countries are on the very high range ("insane") and African countries mostly on the lower... ;-)

You checked motorcycle rentals, which are not what you asked about. I’m not clear why this would inform your choices for a 4x4 trip, but maybe that’s just me. I’m confident you haven’t checked 4x4 rentals in Oman, since I just came from there and found them plentiful.

I think you’ll find plenty to go on in the list I provided, which by design was far from complete. I have no special insights—just some observations, bits of research, and knowledge gained casually from books and websites like this one. And FWIW, I’ve generally found that motorcycle rentals, when available, cost approximately as much as SUVs. Whether “insane” or not is entirely subjective.

I have no experience with car rentals outside Europe but there are two things that come into my mind:

Offroad in a rental car? Of course it can be done but you have to be very carefull. Offroad driving has a much bigger chance of damage to the car than regular driving. Think about scratches from trees or stones. European car rental companies are making big money by charging the renter for every little damage they find, even barely vissible or not even because of your own fault.

Camping with a rental car? The same..... it can be done but you either have to take a lot of stuff with you or accept low comfort. This depents probaby also on your age. Some people have no problem sleeping on a thin air matress in a tent while others want a more comfortable bed.
