Getting knotted
I never know how to tie a proper knot, but came accross the following animated site for knots. Hopefully useful to someone.
Animated Knots by Grog Have fun:D |
Good site. :)
My favourite knot? The half hitch...millions of uses! (Oh no, not only am I a map geek, I'm a knot geek! I can only assure people I do not watch sci-fi on telly!) Matt :) |
the half hitch has its uses, but they are a bit limited, and it is certainly no substitute for a good boline or figure of eight when it comes to holding large forces. My favourite is the 'water-boline', essentially a normal boline but the rabbit goes round the tree twice before going back in the hole..... Don't worry Matt - the geek shall inherit the earth!
In terms of knots for securing luggage I just bought some ratchet straps, nothing compares |

It's not only boy scouts.
Now where did I leave skin tight PVC suit........:eek3: Andy |
there are indeed a variety of different uses for knots, but not as much cross-over as you might expect. I was very dissapointed to find this out when I stopped climbing - I figured that getting into BDSM might be a good next hobby as I would have a head-start in terms of rope-work. It turns out that your traditional Japanese rope bondage doesn't use a single boy-scout or mountaineering knot. Welsh BDSM uses a sheep-shank, that's as close as it gets.
