"Ray Mears" style Hammocks Anyone?
 

They look ok for the money. 1/2 the price of a hennessey. It would be worth adding some hennessey "snakeskins" to make it easier to set up in the rain. However, if you can afford £100 for a Hennessey I'd go that route as you can lie flat in one. The Tarp is a good buy at that price. A good addition to any camp. Thanks for sharing I'd not heard of them before.

Got to say; I was camped on the ground next to a Hennessey hammock user a couple of years back; me with a nice straight back on a Thermarest and he with a curved spine. Yes, they are a bit straighter than a conventional hammock, partly because of how they are manufactured, but they are not "flat" - a nice piece of equipment in certain "difficult" situations (the Hen Hammock website has some good pics to show the point).

Also, without an airbed, any hammock can be very cold!

if you read the blurb, you can put a foam or thinsulate if you wish matress between the hammock "skins" as it is twin skinned..... and with a nice warm sleeping bag,,,,,,mmmmmmmmm toasty!

Flat and hard wins every time
 

Been there, done that - I still prefer a flat and hardish surface, just like my own bed!!:rolleyes2:

In much of Mexico and Central America 10" hammocks are not seen.

Mollydog, what you say sounds right. I'm still getting used to sleeping in my hennessey but it's so comfortable for dozing or reading a book. Keeping my sleeping mat under me is a problem. The double skin seems like a good solution. You can definately lie dead flat in the hennessey on the diagonal,it's designed so you can.

and I thought i had problems with my Staffordshire bull terrier sharing my hammock. I wouldnt mind but she will not watch where she puts her feet as she jumps out!!!:eek3:

You want to hope that your staff doesn't get stung by a wasp whilst your both in the hammock ! It'll take ages to clean up the mess.

But what if there are no trees? :eek3:

Quite so: in fact, the Hennessey Hammock can be set up something like a tent, according to their blurb (never seen it done) - the basic idea is to tie up the two ends to something (like a pair of bikes for instance) to form the shape against rain etc, and then lie on the ground inside the thing.

a lamp post and a bike on its stand toward the lamp post........( precarious but do-able)

A steel railing and a flagpole, cord extended by 5 feet to reach!

between 2 lorries in a scrapyard ( best and quietest night for a while that was)

Sorry matey I'm sponsored by Hennessy Hammocks, but I can say that Modern Hammock sleeping is really great you actually get to lay out pretty flat and as long as you have an inflatable matress you stay nice and warm.

Although I also have bought a Blacks Cygnus Tent, for when I'm staying someplace for more then a night.

Hammocks can be good and bad.
 

I love hammocks (e.g. Hennesey) and I hate them. I have a Hennesey and love it for those summer trips (hiking or biking). It is cool to sleep in and very comfortable.

When the weather is cool it isn't so great. This spring I went hiking and used the hammock and froze my butt off. I didn't have the skins, but had a good sleeping bag and blanket under me. Granted, the weather dropped below freezing.
